Bikesafe

I did mine on saturday an absolute must for all riders had a great observer a bit disconcerting to have a full liverid police bike behind you but when you forget about it you just get on with it. i`d advise any biker to do it:thumb

My wife and I just completed the Gloucester Bikesafe course last weekend, and great fun it was too. Highly recommended, one day in the classroom and one on the road, for £20 it's a steal.

Just signed up for the IAM Skills For Life.

£139 gets a years IAM membership, membership to a local club of your choosing, a "Roadcraft" style book and the exam.

Again, thumbs up for the Bikesafe, did the day with Surrey some months back. Well worthwhile. Now signed up for the IAM also.

I did this some years ago on my Firestorm the format has changed since i did it. I arrived at County Hall in Truro the police introduced themselves checked over the bikes to see they were legal and told us where to go and gave us the directions then he stayed at the back. It was 2 bikes to 1 copper we were told not to ride like we were with the police but as we would naturally ride as he would be giving a false assessment otherwise. He did tell us though to do 30mph in built up areas as the traffic unit were out and they were clamping down on speeding
It was great fun doing stupid speeds in places with the police following and doing the the same speeds we did get some looks by people walking and on the coast roads. After the morning andearly afternoon riding we then went back and th epolice advised us how to improve and assessed out rides that they saw.
There was no charge for doing this course

Thames Valley Ecilop aren't doing Bikesafe according to the bikesafe website, where did you do it?

Rasher came down to Gloucester, but we are very hopeful that TVP will be joining in the national BikSafe programme for next year; call in and meet us at the NEC show,

Martyn, TVP are definitely doing Bikesafe next year - instructors being trained as we speak!

Just to reiterate what has been said, these courses are fantastic. I travelled from Berkshire to Gloucester for mine and found it to be incredibly useful and great fun.

That is good news; TVP covers a large area, so it's a "useful gap" to plug,

Bikesafe in Wiltshire has been totally free up until now for a day's session - long may that continue. I did it a few years ago - best part for me was swapping from leading the police bike, to following him on some of the best roads in the county. It's funded by Wiltshire Council based on the lower than average bike accident statistics in the county and the assumed savings from the emergency service responders and NHS.

Did this with the Met a couple of weeks ago. Being a cold morning I was the only person who turned up. meant I had one on one tuition all day, and was taken for a lovely lunch at a restaurant too.

Great to get critiqued and spend time chatting bikes with someone who lives and breathes it. Following him was an lovely exercise in smoothness.

Glad to say that there were only a couple of things he suggested work on and I will probably join the local IAM to go out and get some more critiquing on my riding.

Mind you, it did take a little while before I got used to looking in my mirror and seeing a police bike there and not go 'ohfreckohfreckohfreckwhathaveidone'

The day before I went, my girlfriend went and did scootersafe on her 125 bike, as she's not passed her test yet. It's done her confidence the world of good and having a policeman with her was a great experience.

Did another Bike safe in North Wales this weekend. I did the two day ride assessment in the spring and this time I wanted the First Bike on Scene "first aid" training.

I have nothing but praise for both courses. I did them in North Wales, mainly for somewhere different to go and so I could learn new roads/routes as well as the course content.

Anyone who hasn't, I would urge them to try and find an FBoS (First Bike on Scene) course and do it. It might be your mae that you save - and if (s)he goes with you, it might be them able to save you.

After 32 years of riding a full license bike, and with something like 400,000 bike miles behind me, I still learned something from the riding section of the weekend. You are never to old to learn and you never stop learning.
