Biketruck - trip to Morocco - April 2009

Just yesterday I paid €42 (inc taxes etc) for a one-way flight between Malaga and London.

That's cheaper than walking!

Greg

Yeah that is cheap - booked for April?

I just paid £178 for return NCL to Palma, Majorca via Easyjet for July.

You forgot to offset the price of flights & taxis from Malaga. Flights are not as cheap as they once were!

I'm another sucker contemplating going south in April. But i'm trying to save. :tears

Yes flights are more expensive and if i'd had to pay full whack it would have been more painfull. As it happens the tribe are going to Cyprus later in the year, the points i got for paying for those flights meant i could get the return to Malaga for £32 (taxes only).

About the only rewards scheme i've used that's saved me any decent amount of cash.

As for taxis, well i guess i'll just roll up me trouser leg and stick me thumb out:eek:

Erm ......................

Do they sponser the site ................... :aidan

The BikeTruck owner has been a paid-up member of this site for some time.

I would be very keen to check up on the insurance situation covering damage to your bike etc if the truck / driver etc are involved in a crash before committing.

I understand that BikeTruck are fully insured and that they advise their insurers of the number of bikes they are carrying on each trip and if any of them are particularly high value.

Hi all,
Just a quickie - re Biketruck (err, this is me - Billy Biketruck), I think you all have really valid points - and points of view. Like most things, its about what's right for you and your position on time, money lifestyle etc. Some people like to ride from their front door in Glasgow and arrive in Merzouga a few days later - and thats really cool!! Ded cool in fact. Others may only have a few days holiday leave - and the quicker they can get thru Scotland, England, France and Spain - the better - cos actually they wanna ride in Africa or Eastern Europe - thats the adventure they want, not Germany, or France etc - they've probably already done that.

Insurance - yup - fully insured - as you would expect? Goods in transit insurance across the industry is actually pretty poor - not many realise that the baseline is RHA rates is only £1300 per Tonne - (divide that with a few GS owners!). But of course if you ship higher value goods you pay 'extra' to go beyond RHA national rates (the baseline rate is higher in mainland Europe under CMR - but still not enough) and get cover for the load - so, 10 Harleys or 5 KTM 250s' - we just get full cover. So, when we move 28 BMWs for Si Pavey - they're insured for whatever they add up to, and I certainly wouldnt want to have Si Pavey on me case for being underinsured.

The truck? we use whichever suits the job. So if there's only 5 or 6 bikes we use a 7.5 tonner - etc. One of our trailers has a big African landscape on it. But you know, you have to make an informed bizness decision about things - and not just in bizness. A guy told me he wouldnt come to Morocco cos he may drop his new GS - and he didnt want to take the risk. We make informed decisions each day and mitigate risk where possible. I took the decision to use a nice truck to help promote Biketruck - just like lots of Biz trucks have up and down the motorways here and in Europe. The bikes are in stillages, not easy to get out - the truck is never left unaccompanied - the driver sleeps in the truck - we stop at secure truck stops etc. etc. But again, I may indeed get shot in the head on the M25 and the whole truck gets shipped to the far east - well, fair point. But thats my biz risk, and thats why I'm insured to cover scary events! Lets hope it never happens!! :)

I'll back out now - cos dont really want to get in a headlong dispute with anyone. Have been a member here for many years, and rather just continue to get great information out of a great site.

Hope you all continue to have great rides - whichever way ya wanna do it!! I'll be riding in April too! So looking forward to it.
Best
Billy
Ps. if i've broken rules by replying here - well I'm not 'spamming' just hopefully adding to the discussion. Over n out...

Seems like a very fair and objective response from Billy Biketruck / KtmBill. Like he says, there's arguments for and against using his service, take your choice...there's no right or wrong answer. I'm thankful there's a choice !

I agree do the maths

If you lived closer. For me though it makes sense -

The north to Algeciras via Plymouth Santander

2,300 miles round trip which at 50mpg is about 210litres of fuel or £190
4 nights of hotels, say £20 a night, so thats another £80
4 Days worth of food, another £40
Taking Richeyroo's cheap ferry quote of £190 (I never found one that cheap)

So for me i'm already up to £500, thats before you put in all the other costs, half the mileage of a set of tyres, 19hours of vomiting on a boat (priceless!),road tolls etc.

But the clincher for me is the extra 6 days of holidays/days away from the family that i'd need. Going away on the bike is a selfish endeavour, i'll enjoy the trip more if I'm the one paying rather than the rest of the family.:thumb

I agree 100% just do the maths , never mind the time and the mileage on your bike ,:pullface

I know trucks are expensive and all that... but he's gunna get 20 bikes on that thing at least... at £500 a pop that's oooo, let me see, ....ten grand per trip. Feck. I'm in the wrong business.

Yes, yes, I know. Drivers wages, board and lodging, derv, insurance, loan repayments, tyres and maintenance, all the taxes and stuff and yadda yadda yadda, etc.

But ten grand plus per trip. Hmmmm....

At least he doesn't have to worry about joining the AA with all those 1200s aboard. Bound to have a few BuMW Assist cards stashed under the seats. :P

I`ll support Billy Big Truck here and reckon the price is right. OK, if he gets 20 bikes it`s 10k but remember ferries are pricey for trucks, the truck does @ 10mpg, the driver has to be paid and has to wait there for the return trip, insurance, tyres etc etc. Sure he`s making profit but isn`t that what we are all trying to do:nenau

It`s not a bad price and a really good alternative IMHO.
