Billingsgate cafe…. Then a Wander to Excel…..

It was very much a spur-of-the-moment thing, having woken up and the overnight rain stopped.

It’s half term and the roads were near enough empty. I caught the D3 bus in Wapping at 06:20 and was in the market for a wander about by 06:45. Sat in the cafe with a tea (apologies, brew) by 07:00. There was a new girl on the till in the cafe, on her first day….. very confused.

I met a great counter holder, specialising in all sorts of ‘exotic fish’ for I guess the Caribbean and Pacific restaurants. He, naturally enough, was born under much bluer skies.

Let’s try and agree a date to meet up. Anytime between say 06:30 and 07:15, well ahead of the 08:00 closure. Anyone else interested?
I could very well be interested in a breakfast meeting.

Always amazes me how quickly they get the fish from the Quay to markets like billingsgate. Most of the fish in Northern Ireland is caught in Portavogie, Ardglass, and Kilkeel. A lot of it particularly Prawns, were shipped directly to Spain and France. Now becasue of the extra Brexit paperwork it's mostly shipped to Scotland before its onward travels.

Indeed.

In a sense it’s history repeating itself, as many of the former wharves, docks and even streets retain at least the names of the Scottish and Irish towns, cities and enterprises they once served.

Equally (or more) amazing is how very fresh fish arrives each day in Madrid, an awfully long way from the sea.

I do like a nice kipper. M&S do a Scottish one which is very tasty...

The three kippers this morning were so fresh; a real treat. They still tasted ‘fishy’ if that makes sense, the smoking having not overpowered them for days.

Excellent. It’s doable, for sure, getting there for say 07:15.

Stratford station > Jubilee line to Canary Wharf or maybe much the same, Stratford > DLR to All Saints. Let’s liaise.
