Went for a wander this afternoon, but nobody told the wildlife that the two day motorcycle ceasefire had ended :blast

Missed the bike completely, just hit me square in the face :censor: Good job for once I had my mouth shut :D

Interestingly my prediction came true.

My Helite Airbag offered absolutely no protection against this type of accident, as it had no trigger to deploy.

Whereas if I had been wearing my neck brace, it would have immediately offered some protection for my neck against this impact.

As it stands, being punched in the face by a 60mph lazy pigeon can give you whiplash symptoms....

60mph? No wonder it hurt :-)

Quite some years back I was heading home from Montpellier on my ST1100. I was on what is now the autoroute that leads to the Eifel bridge over Milau. Back then it was free, 3 lanes in each direction and deserted.

I was on an empty road, heading downhill doing the max that 1100 had to offer. So reasonably quick. A flock of starlings raced up and across the road ahead of me, probably 20-30ft in the air. One poor bird seemed to be plucked from the flock and was vaporised on my screen and helmet. I probably breathed in half of it!

To this day I think some aerodynamic effect was responsible for the bird being plucked from the flock - perhaps combined with a dead spot in its flap stroke - I don't know.

But it was the instant vaporisation i remember. Maybe a pigeon being a bit bigger it would have all been different?!

At least those Garmin cameras still work and do their job, covered my whole 5.5 hour journey start to finish.

Faultless setup. Always on, every time.

Stupid birds... look at my post http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/479947-GS-bikes-and-Pigeons I'm not sure why, but the GS is the worst bike I've had for Pigeons?... like they just wait for you to come along. Maybe because they are quiet and your on them before they realise?... but one square in the mush or even something bigger like a pheasant at 'legal' speeds could do some serious harm! As said in my post... once saw a Harley with its front end pushed right under.. I ased if it had gone through a wall or something... Nope... Pheasant strike!!
Take care with birds... they are a lot more solid than they look... any thoughts of pushing them off with you hand etc, forget it.... they could easily break your neck I'm sure.... :)
Glad you got away with it.. bet you'll ache tomrrow

I'd dread a bird strike at 3 times that speed... It'd kill you I think...
Well, I had an indicated 145mph. Not sure that old ST would have managed 3 times that :D

But yes, bigger the bird... I'll stop pondering!

Yeah starting to ache now a little bit. It's just like very mild whiplash, tension in shoulders and neck.

But I did brace in the nano-second before impact....

Don't want to be doing that very often for sure and ALWAYS close your visor above 30 mph... in my opinion.

Pigeon vs Pheasant, will take the pigeon please, however them big black crows are pretty heavy also, and plenty around here dropping bloody walnuts on your head as you ride along.............:D

Had a pheasant hit the handguard once, felt like quite an impact though did no damage, but wouldn't want one in the mush. Pheasants and even more so pigeons on the road are quite risky to approach because they are so dopey they don't seem to see you until you are really close, and when they do they invariably seem to take off towards approaching vehicles rather than away from them making a strike much more likely. In contrast the more intelligent species like crows and magpies will just hop to the side of the road as you approach and resume picking at roadkill as soon as you are past.

I nearly had a kite hawk hit me a few months ago when it emerged from the hedging to my left

Its the thick ones you need to look out for.. as you say, the more intelligent ones keep out of the way... clearly pigions and pheasants are as thick as they come... Once watched a pigeon get run over by a bus... bus was doing all of 1 mph and the strupid thing jusy sat there and watched it coming?... POP!
