Help!!

Got an 05 R12GS that is overdue for some sort of service. It's done 7000 miles, and was serviced at about 700 miles, a bit over a year ago.

What type of service do I need? Annual, Minor or Major? :nenau

What kind of money should I be looking to pay in or around the M25?

I've ended up doing quite a bit of commuting on me bike, so want the best care rather than the cheapest job, if you know what I mean!!

Phoned a few dealers and had lots and lots of conflicting advice!! And a huge range of quotes!

Thanks in advance
Steve J

You need a combined 6000 mile and annual service. Or as BMW call it, a "BMW Service with BMW Annual Inspection". I've no idea how much this costs in London, sorry, but I seem to remember paying about 200 quid in Southport, quite possibly less.

Just to advise my 1200GS is now in at Alan Jefferies-Shipley for 6k service at a total cost of £175.00 which includes the following warranty claims:

1.Replacement cracked screen and noisy.
2.Front brake squeaking
3.Computer update -battery light coming on when start and mileage countdown resetting itself.

As part of the above they have given me a loan bike for 24hrs -800s.

They also inform me that BMW have announced some recalls.

Interesting they also inform me that the electrics do not shut themselves fully down until the steering lock is on so if the bike is left for a long time with lock off the battery will drain down.

So far the BM service etc is spot on and not missing my Honda VFR whatsoever no more Jap Crap for me.

Plenty of food for thought there.

Paid £200 for 6000 mile service last week. Got a R1200S loaner for the day though :thumb To be fair, I thought it would be paying for an oil change and a stamp in the service book, but the engine is now a lot less 'tappetty' (so they did adjust clearances) and they washed it. This one is running as sweet as a nut :bounce1

This sounds well dodgy. I leave my bike in the garage on center stand with front wheel straight ahead, and have no problems with a flat battery.

The manual says something about the electrics being live for 5 mins until the hazard switch light goes out.

However, your service seems cheap, so it's not all bad!!

I was told exactly the same thing, but apparently the software recall we had last year was to correct this and a few other points. people had not been using the steering lock in garages (whyever not :nenau ) and this had led to flat batteries.

The annual service initially was a series of checks plus hydraulic fluid changes. BMW have lengthened the time between fluid changes and the checks are effectively done at the 6000 mile service. So your dealer should now roll the two together and charge no more than he did for the 6000. No doubt some dealers will be trying to conn riders into paying more. :nono . Incidentally, it was my dealer who told me this which is a credit to him.

As i understand it, it is either a 6000 service or a yearly inspection if the milage has not been acheived. :nenau

There are a couple of items checked in the yearly service in addition to the 6000 mile one. So officially you need both, although thereis a lot of overlap, so you shouldn't be paying the full cost of the two sepatate services.

Further to my previous thread, the 6k service came in just cheaper than expected £170.35-all fluids etc etc included (not over and above as Jap dealers) and all warranty items carried out with no fuss.

As far as I'm concerned Alan Jefferies are the best thing since sliced bread and I will not go elsewhere. :clap

For once no moans whatsoever but excellent red carpet service-we can give credit where it is due......

Keep up the good work. :bounce1

I enquired in May this year and this was thier response.

"The cost of a 6000 miles service on an R1200GS is approximately £165.00
including Vat

The cost of an annual service is approximately £145.00 including Vat

There will be approximately £50 - £60 discount if you gave the services done
simultaneously."

I don't know how you paid what you did you lucky git!!!

My Bike will be at about 4600miles when I set off on a trip in Sept, reckon I'll do abou 2- 2500 miles. so whilst its not due a service, it will be sometime into the trip. I was debating changing the oil before I go & servicing it on my return. How strict are BM@ regarding the servicing frequency.

Just been quoted £304 for the combined 6k & annual service which seems expensive.

Which Dick Turpin of a dealer quoted that price?

I never use mine - I've had a bike written off in the past due to damage to the steering head when some thieving scrotes attempted to nick my bike.

I've 'missed' two services this way so far and by far greater margins than you will.

I spoke to my dealer both times as I too was worried about any issues over waranty etc. They were absolutly fine about it but it may be worth just letting your dealer know.

Both times I changed the oil before setting off and then had the bike serviced when I returned (including another oil change).

I just paid £164.46 for the service at Cooper's Reading. Though they did have the bike 8 days cos they forgot to tell me it was ready.

6000 Mile Service - costs

For anyone's who's searching / interested:

Service: 6000 mile
Bike: April '06 R1200GS
Dealer: Barrie Robson at York
Cost: £164.27
Comments from service: Rear brake disk is warped and
to be replaced under warranty next week.
Rear brake pads almost 'shot' and
to be replaced same time as disk but, obviously,
at my expense.
