My 08 bike has done 3000 miles and was serviced in April 500 miles ago. The service book says next service is due at 6000 miles on the odometer, that would be in 3500 miles time. Is this right or would it be 6000 miles or a year from the last service?

But is it 6000 miles or a year from the last service or in this case 3500 miles from the last service which doesn't seem to make sense?

Yes, do you know if it is 6k on the clock or 6k from the last service? Other bikes I've owned have been the latter.

Why was it serviced at 3000 miles ? Altough I suspect you would be ok to service the bike every 6000 miles from them ie at 9000 (please don't take this as any form of recommendation as I am a numpty on the internet) personally I would would service at 6000 on the clock and get the book stamped. It makes it so much easier when you come to re-sell and the buyer is looking to check the service record.

2 services One an Annual and the other a 6000

Your service interval is 6000 miles OR Annually if you don't do big miles Period !

First Service after PDI is 600 miles

6000 miles = basically Eng oil and Filter, check clearances balance and consumable wear <- Take these as part of all the services

12000 = Engine oil and filter and plugs and Air filter and transmission fluids

18000 = Eng oil and filter

24000 = engine oil filter and transmission fluids plugs and oil filter and fuel filter

32,000 I think was the one to change alternator belts on R series and cam chain guides on K series but may stand to be corrected

Annual Service = Transmission and Brake and clutch fluids / Coolant / Fork Oil depending on year and model

So it's set mileages rather than miles since the last service!

Any idea how much the 6k service costs? Guessing £250 or so if valve clearances checked...

I did ask last week but it seems like it's varied, not fixed servicing as with some. Just wondered what others have paid... :)

My understanding is that there are two services - the Annual Inspection and the 6000 mile service - both pretty much self explanatory.

Just had my 600 mile service last week at 800miles. Vines told me the next one was 12 months from the date of the service or 6000 miles, which ever comes first. The bike will tell me. yes....my bike talks to me.....oh the voices....:pullface

The '08 model year is different in that is it doesn't have the two levels of service.

Every year - at least.

Every 6,000 miles; so if you do 24,000 miles in a year thats four service visits.

Page 163 of the handbook is your oracle. :thumb2

If you had your bike serviced at 3,000 miles (for whatever reason i.e. has it been a year since the last service?) then the next service is due at 9,000 miles or 12 months hence.

The date and mileage of the next service should be entered in the service book.

A service reminder display comes on before you reach the required mileage.

That's what I thought! The bike was bought March 2008 and had its running in service, 1 year later a service at 2500 miles. The tech has written in the book that the service is due at 1 year from the annual service or at 6000 miles odometer reading which is only 3500 miles from the last service as opposed to 9000 miles which I would have thought. Have called BMW Customer Service to verify though just in case...

Thanks for all the info :)

It sounds like the Tech got it wrong ............ Tho in fairness, I know at my dealer, it is normally the Service Advisor who fills in the service book :augie

The service book is quite clear for mine. 6000 miles, or one year whichever comes sooner. The confusion here is that your bike was serviced between service intervals for mileage, but could have been serviced on the mark time wise?

In theory you could have a three year old bike which has only done 1000 miles (I know, but e.g.) but has had three services..... On the other hand you could in theory have one a year old with 18k on the clock which has also had three....

If you don't put any more than 2.5k on your bike in the next year, it wont matter. If you do, you have to choose between time or odometer reading.:thumb2

When the dealer resets the service warning clock it does 6000 from that mileage which if you managed to do every service on the exact milage would be
600
6600
12600
18600
etc

Not sure how that equates to how the handbook is written, but that is how the onboard warning works - I know this as my bike has done 12900 and it is still in the service warning countdown phase that you see during the preflight check just after turning on the ignition.

Bike is already booked for a service I and expect the full service warning to be on instead of the countdown when I drop it in.

Just spoke with the dealer and they are unsure at the moment as the o8 service schedule has changed.

My feeling is that its 6000 miles or 1 year from the last service, so the tech has written wrong most likely. Still awaiting confirmation from BMW.
