OK I'm new here and have searched the FAQ but I cant quite get my head round the service intervals for my 1200 GSA.

As part of the deal I made with the dealer they were to give my 08 GSA its annual inspection and this they have done. Now the odometer is currently 8700 miles and they have stamped the book that the next service is due in 12 months (16th March 2011) or 12000 miles which ever comes first.

Looking at the copy they gave me of the maintenance schedule it states the at the bottom

Next service is due on 16/3/2011
or in 10000Km (6000 miles)

Would that not mean the stamp in the book should read
16th March 2011 or 14700 miles ?

I do quite a bit of mileage an this could make the difference between 2 and 3 services each year.

Service intervals are 6k or once a year, so you bike will be due a service at 12,000 miles , your annual inspection is due,well, annually so that will be due in a year. The only exception to this is if you had a service, not just an annual inspection, now in which case the book is right.

Basically ride 6000 miles, service, ride another 6000 miles service and so on...................

I cover 18000 a year so have 3 services a year.

The annual inspection isn't the same as a proper service as far as I can gather, so it's right.....It's as they said, whichever comes first

On my first GS I've always had a service every 6000 miles, but I did 16,000 in 12 months, so I don't take any notice of the yearly service, anyway as it's done by a dealer and the book is stamped...no probs!!!

Looking at the annual inspection schedule attached they changed the engine, gearbox and final drive oil. Am I to understand that say my bike had done 11000 miles then it would all need doing again in a couple of weeks time?

I see lots of "ors" in the schedule but from what I hear they should be "ands"

They are a bit out of date aren't they? The have an issue date of 12 2003 so I suppose they are from the first of the 1200's. The one I posted above is 02 2010 so much newer.

It still doesn't help with my dilemma.

If I do 12000 miles a year do I need two services and one annual inspection or just two services?

In other words. Is the annual inspection only needed if the bike hasn't covered 6000 miles (and therefore had a regular service) in the last 12 months?

annual service is if you do less than 6000 miles a year. If you do 6000 or multiples off you just do the 6000 or 12000 mile service. A 6000 isnt the same as a 12000. You dont need the annual services if your doing the mileage. Your last service was a bit late by 2700 miles. They reckon things like oil, brake fluid and all that also deteriorates with age hence the 1 year or 6000 miles whichever is first.

You need an annual service whatever miles you do. Mine is 1 year old next month and I am booked for a 12k combined with an annual. The annual has stuff in it not in a 6k or 12k. It works out cheaper if you combine a miles service with an annual. But they stamp the book twice once in the miles section and once in the annual. I would always combine, it doesn't matter if you are a few weeks early or late with the annual.

It's a little clearer now. The bike did get it's 6K (5440 miles) service May last year so nothing has actually been missed.

The real confusion was the dealer told me (after I paid him) it had to get serviced every 6000 mikes AND every year so 12K annual mileage would mean 3 services. What you say (and common sense tells me) that only the 2 mileage related services would be needed.

It still doesn't address the bit on the bottom of the schedule I scanned above that says the next service is due in 12 months OR in 6000 miles. The stamp in my book says its due in 3300 miles.

Aww. Now you have just confused me again. So if I take it in for the annual service at 11K and they change everything on the schedule above. They expect me to bring it in 3 tanks of fuel later and get 90% of it done again. At least the final drive should last forever with all those oil changes.

Take in the service record book (back of owner’s manual) they should fill this out and that will tell you the date / mileage of the next service. Anyway did on mine.

It won't make a difference and your service book will show correct service intervals.

Frank, you are quite wrong. The annual is only for those who don't cover 6k per year. All the service work done is covered in the standard schedule. If you pay for an annual service and you are doing more than 6k, you are throwing money down the drain

The only things they seemed to have missed off were the valve clearances and throttle sync if they should have done them I will take it back. Can you see if you agree please.

And this is exactly how I understand it and this agrees with the text at the bottom of the service schedule I scanned above.

So are you saying that my service book has been stamped up wrong? I think we agree it should say next service due at 16/3/2011 or 14700 miles. The dealer is trying to get me to bring it in for an extra (early) service by stamping it with a next service at 16/3/2011 or 12000 miles

I think the dealer is just trying to get your service book to read properly i.e 6k, 12k, 18k 24k etc etc. Your bike has just been inspected by the dealer so will be absolutely fine, I have no doubt.

It's entirely up to you how to proceed. If you are at all concerned, have it done at 12k and then you are bang on track and you can then ride it like you stole until 18k.

The biggies are every 12k (i.e 12k, 24k, 36k etc) when they do a lot of valve work etc so that will be next for you.

Remember Boris, it's a tractor engine and doesn't really need the schedule to be bang on like a KTM or Aprilia. My service book is all over the place and is +/- a couple of 1000 miles in places and it's survived this long with zero problems.
