Riding west on the M56 yesterday and the fuel warning light comes on, fuel meter says 31 miles to go, no probs. 1 minute later engine cuts out completely, I'm in lane 3 doing '70'! Manage to coast to the side without getting rear ended, no hard shoulder so I'm pretty exposed. Ring the police and BMW assistance, I'm out of my cover period but in a dangerous place so we'll send a truck, no problem. I ended up being recovered by the Highways agency, so have to cough up £150 quid but I'm still impressed by Assistances attitude. Fuel sensor was replaced less than 12 months ago, call Williams Manchester and they apologise profusely and get the bike booked in double quick and are going to sort out my recovery fee with BMW.

No a great situation to be in but I'm impressed by the customer service!

It is unreasonable to expect BMW or dealer to pay for your recovery regardless of how recently the bike was repaired. Nobody can guarantee against mechanical failure so this is why we pay for breakdown cover (which is an insurance policy). Its included in the price you pay for the first two years of a BMW bike from date of registration and down to you thereafter. If you choose not to buy it then you have to take the consequences on the chin. End of.

Yes I know. I was commenting on the possibility and implied expectation on BMW covering the recovery fee. I dont think it will be offered, but even if it is, I dont think it should be accepted.

I think its great that Williams Manchester are going to do something about the recovery fee. They fitted the sensor and it would have had a warranty on it, so i guess they thought they should compensate for the bloody dangerous situation the failure left you in. Maybe they have no obligation to do anything apart from replace the fauly item, but its good to see customer service like that.................its very often a "nothing to do with us mate" attitude nowadays.

Aye, nasty situation, but Williams are one of the better dealers out there IME when it comes to sorting stuff out.

Yes but what's so difficult to know how much fuel is in your tank I hardly look at the gauge , I know how many miles my bike dose to e full tank and calculate before any trip

I carry one of those wee Touratech fuel cannisters.........Just in case my gauge goes tits up and i've used it a few times now mostly helping other folks who've run out of fuel

I always reset the trip counters and average around 9 miles per litre

+1 Running out of fuel is the riders fault, zero the trip every fill up and work out fuel consumption.

i've had 2 GSAs and i only use the RID fuel gauge.

i must be lucky, or more likely, missed the models with the crappy fuel strip

My HP2 didn't have a gauge............Just a yellow light and a countdown!

Must have been good though as everytime i ran out there was no petrol left in it...............!

13.5 litres of arse clenching bliss!
