Just trying to set the inlet/exhaust valves on the left cylinder (80 Basic), thats left cylinder as i am sat on bike. I have the front cover off and turn the engine with the plugs out with the alan key through the alternator. I understand the principal of setting the valves when closed, ie with the gap open for the feeler gauge, but i am just a bit worried about making the settings at TDC exactly. I looked through that little peek hole near the engine oil fillet cap and when i take the rubber bung out i can see "OT" then under that "S" is that TDC for that cylinder? ie the left as i am sat on the bike< and thats when i set the .10 and .20mm
Also how do i get the other to TDC as no window on the right of the engine....i dont think?
Any help please so i can finish job off.
Thanks.:blast

S ...is static timing around 6' BTDC

As Tim says i complete rev will set other side ready..:thumb

FFS don't do as some Moron did  thought they were tight and slackened them off, only to discover the valves were TDC on the end of exhaust and start of inlet also known as "On the Rock":blast:blast

Rattled like a bastard and dropped a pushrod off it's tappet :blast

Have now shit pants!... What the fook does on the rock mean??.. I am looking through a peek hole seeing OT then S, the piston seems to be up on the lefy cylinder, both valves are shut i think and as it happens my inlets is already a firm-ish .10mm and my outlet i have done to the same firm-ish feel at .20mm. If another way to stick my finger over the plug hole on each cylinder and when i feel the compression against it thats the right (compression) stroke for that cylinder?...Sorry to be an arse, but i'm giving it a go so i know for future...:thumb Thanks

You'll know when it's on the right stroke for setting tappets as the inlet valve will close before the piston is at TDC.
Rock, means when one valve is opening and the other closing, which is what the other cylinder will be doing.
Rocking:)

Ok just gonna change underwear and give it another bash! Thanks for your help:D

Be careful if you decide to poke a pencil down the plug 'ole to find TDC else you'll be asking how to take the cylinder head off next:D

Used a chop stick!

Hmmmm have turned engine to set up for the othe cylinder, but before i came a full 360 back to OT with S underneath, i seem to have unearthed a "Z" whats that please?
I am running between Computer and bike in the garage!:nenau

Oh no:eek: if you can see the Z it means a new cranshaft is needed.

I'm just gonna pretend the "Z" did'nt happen and carry on til the OT then S shows its ugly mug again, lid back on left and open up the right, set that side, make hot chocolate, have a bath, go to bed. Get up and have a full breakfast, start bike go for a ride.:pullface

or stick your thumb over the plug hole and feel for compression on the upstroke.
