Yesterday morning I rode through 3 hours of torrential rain. There was so much water hitting the bike that the oil temp. went down to 3 bars for about 30 minutes on the motorway. It's usually at 5.

It made me wonder if the oil temp. is actually reduced or if the the temp. sensor is just getting a bit cold?

I'm not bothered about it. As my Starcom system got some water in it too and I had to unplug the audio I had plenty of time to think about this kind of crap.

I've seen this once before when I took the GS off road and splashed through many 2 foot deep puddles.

I noticed the same on a trip to Scotland a couple of weeks ago.
In the (frequent) torrential rain, my oil temp dropped a couple of bars. I guess the oil cooler becomes a much more efficient oil/water cooler rather than oil/air.

I don't think the oil cooler has too much to do with cooling. Had the same thing on my GS, but now I ride my 1100RT in cold rain and the temp stays at 5 bars no matter what.

So I guess that water on the cylinders and cold air has more to do than the oil cooler.

Hi Dancata,
I was on my 1150RT. It was very very wet yesterday.

Another question then. I normally keep below 4k revs until the temp. is a 5 bars. If after riding for a long time the temp. goes down to 3 bars is the oil actually colder? As I was on the motorway I was running at 4k anyway and made sure it stayed that way until th temp. came back to normal.

When I get close to work I go through the Blackwall Tunnel. The GS and RT temp. always goes to 6 bars and always stays that way until I park up in Canary Wharf. Yesterday the RT's temp went back down to 5 as soon as I exited the tunnel.

The wind was very cold and it was still peeing down..

All just observations. Like I said, I'm not bothered. I know it's not a bike problem. I just get a bit bored commuting into London.

Riding in the snow on the motorway last year my temp bars steadly went down to zero  so I pulled off at a service stop and let it tick over a bit till it started to go back up then carried on, it then dropped again till it stopped snowing and went back to normal.

I rarely see 5 bars unless I venture "sooth" to warmer climes...:D

Rain........... on a bike? No no no.

If you're worried about the motor not getting up to temperature in the cold, stick some Duct tape over half the rad.

Showing off would be showing my beer fridge :comfort

Had a couple of rides today totalling approx 50 miles fore and aft gear oil change and didn't see over 3 bars here at 60N. Kept beer in panniers to save fridge:D

I did about 150 miles, just to get out of the house, (was disreputable yesterday) and went to watch daughter riding dressage later, too bloody warm and dusty, could do with some rain :blast
