Black Engines

would anyone who has/does own a black engined GS1150 care to comment on the longevity of the coating?

any issues, at all? also what year did these first appear?

is it also true black ones are faster??

04 GSA with 30K on it.

It's also had almost everything imaginable in the way of road/trail crap on it at some stage too.

Still nice and black, not peeling or flaking but the finish seems to be getting a bit thin on the gearbox for some reason (no problem as I have a spare gearbox to swap over at some stage and re-coat the original casing).

Best protection seems to be just a decent, quality polish after removing any baked-on crud.

03 with 21000 miles owned from new,ordered the black engine as I liked the look and still do.

No problem with black finish you just have to be carefull what you clean it with or it can soon become a grey finish.

I have touched up a few very minor marks with Warhammer paint, 'Chaos Black', is a great match it comes in small pots from any Games Workshop Shop for £2.50,it also matches the paint on the master cylinders very well.

My RT has a black engine, lasts longer than the silver.

Give it a shine with Cherry Blossom Parade Gloss Shoe polish, it works

Looking at similar aged silver engined models that have been used all year round then the Black engine finish is better than the silver at looking good / withstanding corrosion..........quick spray with FS365 after washing and it looks great

04 GSA with 35000 on. I know its still a baby in GS terms but so far the black finish is immaculate. Quick spray with WD40 or FS365 every couple of rides seems to be a good idea though.

My old 1150 had a black engine Motorex protect and shine kept it in good nick!!

+1 on that - an excellent product. used it religously on all my 90s Hinkley Trumpets and kept both the engine and faux carbon exhaust looking fantastic. it wont discolour on hot parts which is always useful.

leaves that nice 'fresh from the showroom' smell too.

I've got the black engine/gearbox and it only seems to get dirty as opposed to corroded. I usually use the turtle wax black coloured polish which brings it up well. No complaints

I have a black engined 1100 and have found the paint does wear thin and corrode in places but it is simple to fix, I just give the area a quick rub over with a pan scourer like "scotchbrite" and then just touch it up with any old black paint, it always blends in nicely and does not notice.

It is much more difficult to getaway with this on the silver engines.
