If your referring to the oval fan belt cover right at the front of the engine then you need nothing, 5 torx screws and it's off.

How old is your bike?

If under warranty the dealer will replace the entire panel.

If you bought it new, take it back to the dealer and discuss the possibility of BMW standing some (or all ) of the cost, as this is a known fault. Same happened to me and it was replaced as a 'goodwill' gesture on my '05 bike. Good luck.

Its a fairly involved process as you have to drain the oil and remove the lower alternator drive belt pully which needs the inevitable special tool. The haynes manual explains it fairly clearly. When mine got done under warranty it took the work shop about 4 hours.

I think the cover in question Philis the black belt cover rather than the actual engine panel.

Zippy, while you've got the front cover off, don't forget to remove the foam rubber/sponge insert and bin it...

The foam bit doesn't do much except retain water & accelerate the rot.
