Evening all,

Owing to a mishap removing the crank seal from mine, I’m looking for a front engine cover for an R1150. I have a GS, but I believe they’re the same on all 850s, 1100s and 1150’s after 1997.

Before I take the plunge on Motorworks, does anyone have one gathering dust they’d be happy to part with?

Silver if possible - I can respray it if needed but would prefer not to if possible.

Cheers
Mike

Bloody buggered my finger in the process too 🤣

What do you reckon?

About the seal. My finger will heal, the cover won’t 😬

dress it up with a half round file 2nd cut , get some Permatex ultra gray , little smear in the gouge , leave it for 10 mins pop in the new seal .
the Permatex stays rubbery , doesn't go solid . i had to do this on a much deeper gouge on a gearbox o/put seal on a le Mans .
that gouge doesn't go all the way , that is useable , knock the seal in as far as the bit not damaged .

ps , i don't give a fuck about your finger ( i'm really a very caring person )
new seal needs the external ribs , they will drag any excess sealant in .

I thought something similar, but talked myself out of it due to the risk of opening the aperture as I dress the gouge. For the cost of a cover (and while it’s already off) it could be worth peace of mind. I’ll sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

a Yorkshire man would do it ......you are better than a Yorkshireman ....aren't you ?
or are you really a shandy drinking southern poofter , hiding in Lancashire ?

( just to give you a bit of motivation. )

Just use a bit of sandpaper on a bit of wood or pipe

ROTATE / Twist it, as per the seal lines do NOT do in and out motions or you may groove it! You really just want to eliminate the sharp edges It does not need to be perfect !!

It is not a pressure seal it is just a splash seal and the outer edge is still good !

Don;t bother with sealant the rubber outer of the seal will take up the slack and a small lick of rubber grease around the outer side will make sure it fits nice and clean without any chance of tearing !

don;t buy a BM replacement seal as they those stupid Membrane seals and the outer is hard plastic!

Just get a standard single (or double lip) one from your local bearings store or online 30 X 42 X 7

Right Up and at em !! Get it sorted

Cheers Doc. This is the one I picked up from Motorworks…. I take it I should leave it in the packet and buy another?
@Bikermike1411 Yeah you can't see if you have marked / damaged the seal face as you fit it Return it or Bin it is my advice

IF it were me I would just remove that high / sharp spot as described but entirely your choice, remembering that this is just a splash seal not an HP seal

I don;t get why people are so hung up on using the newer style seals as originals that I have seen have done over 100K without change

Cheers all

@DrFarkoff I just added the seal to my big shopping list at MW, it’s what came 🤷🏻 I’d sooner fit another cover, purely for peace of mind, but I’ll look into dressing the cover today and see how I feel.

@JohnnyBoxer - all sold out, but hardly surprising at that price - I’d have bought one myself just to put away! Does mean there should be some serviceable used ones lurking in sheds somewhere though!

Somebody may have a new one lurking - they were black ones and have long since sold their 1150’s
Put up a wanted advert
Not selling mine as I have 2 1150’s still and currently selling discontinued brand new Honda XR parts and quickly realising that these parts are valuable now you can no longer buy them from Honda anymore
