Black Ice is a Bu**er

I'm picking up my 1150 Thursday eve in Edinburgh and been worried sick about the black ice. Been contemplating hiring a van. Then a friend mailed me, he came down at 9:00 this morning on black ice in Edinburgh. Not far from his home, luckily just doing 20 mph. He's ok and the bike has a few bruises. The BMW crash bars bent a lot. I hate the salt on the roads but hope thye grid Thurday. How can I find out if there is likely to be ice? I also presume it will not be the main roads that is a problem but the smaller ones.

Check the forecast.

It was pretty mild this morning. Chances are it'll be the same the morn. Check with the met office website tho'. If you can collect the bike in full daylight then do so. Bad enough coping with a new to you bike without having to cope with the dark as well.

My guess is you'll be fine.

Current forecast for Thursday at 18:00 hr is 5-8 degrees C so should be ice-free. I didn't get off quite as lightly as I thought (factured rib) but reckon I was just unluckly. Enjoy the new bike

Cheers

Bad luck about the rib mate

I'm the bloke that dropped his bike in Edinburgh yesterday. I was going dead straight but had to cross the crown of the road to avoid some parked cars.....bang.....front's gone and I'm sliding and watching the bike head towards a parked Merc! Thankfully it stopped before hitting it. The guy who stopped his car to help me just about fell getting out of it. My council taxes at work eh....

Got off pretty lightly in the injury stakes but it has rattled my nerve. Rode the whole of last winter and only really one "moment" after it snowed.

Somewhat less than happy but not as bad as yourself. Hope you're back on the bike soon.

ps. now in the market for H&B engine bars in Black if anyone has 'em! The BMW bars appear to be made of Brie. :(

Westfield, E.Sussex

On my 50 mile commute this morning. One mile to go. Country lane dropping into lower ground. Black ice for about 40 feet. The steering was going side to side but the bike just ploughed on upright. My breathing became quite heavy just after though! I was more than a bit nervous on the way home. I shoudn't have taken the bike this morning and was very lucky.
