does sound like clocks to me, but could just be a simple wiring fault (electrics and simple..hehe).
Just more easy thing to check is the regulator. mine was goosed and overcharging the battery, so it all seemed fine, but i'd have sparodic clock issues too, so maybe just check this as a new one is only about £30
Update on two counts - took the clocks apart again and doused the PCB with PCB cleaner spray and put it back together. No joy - they didn't work but then next day (I suppose when they had dried off from their dousing with PCB cleaner) and they work again - so far without fading or flickering or fading in and out. Seems to be sorted.
In the mean time M&S in newcastle have obtained a replacement set from KTM on the basis that they should not have failed. I am going to get these fitted and keep the other set as a back up I think - they will probably fail again if I don't get the new ones fitted!
M&S fitted the clocks - free replacement goodwill from KTM - all good.
Suggested using diving helmet spray to prevent moisture issues in future.
My experience suggests that if anyone has fading flickering display spray with PCB cleaner and allow top though roughly dry and that should sort the issue.

Having sorted the clocks yet another problem emerges, this time I went to love the bike on the drive, turned the bars [with no key in the ignition] and the clocks lit up and the lights came on just as if I'd turned the key in the ignition. Moved the bars back to the left and out went the clocks and lights. Seems to be a problem others have encountered - the wiring from the ignition switch is very tight and gets pinched and damaged leading to the bike cutting out at random moments and in my case turning g on when it isn't supposed to!
The longer I have this KTM (a three year old bike) the more I wonder just how well made they are?? This should surely be a recall issue given the potential danger involved. Hope it'sOK to post a link to another forum - I'd be interested to know if anyone else on here has had this issue.
Up at 0600 today and fixed by 0700 - I can go to Wales after all! I have removed the plastic fill piece on both sides and cut and reconnected the wires. I have also released the cable tie that was holding the harness next to the ignition barrel. this has given far more movement and no tension in the harness.
The top of the two pinch points was where my issue lay - both wires insulation lost and bare wire and exposed hence turing power on when I moved the bars.
