The objective, for reasons I fail to understand, is to kill something, so why not just be honest and do the job the easy way instead of fannying about and spouting garbage about sportmanship etc. The beast does not have or wish to have a gun to shoot back.

What's to appreciate about a defenseless animal being shot at long range by a bloke with a sniper rifle (or whatever it is)?
Well, to answer the defenceless animal slant.
Yes it is a defenceless,and yes it is an advert for a make of rifle.
However ignoring that part ,it is filmed very well,the story ,based around the hunting of an old stag which has had his day and now wanders off to die a lingering slow death,to slowly starve to death ,possibly be found curled up, a thin ragged body.
Would it not be preferable to die quickly ,to feel a shock ,unsure what it was then blackness,to then enter whatever is after?
Regards the shot,it wasn't a neck shot, the bullet struck quite low ,taking the heart then exiting out the far shoulder slightly higher due to the angle. The slow motion camera work showing the path of the bullet i thought was very good. No doubt part of it was a mock up of the actual shot taken at the beast/stag.
But the underlying theme of the short film,was one of respect for the stag.Something I realise must be very difficult for people who do not stalk to grasp. To properly manage and stalk deer ,requires great empathy towards the deer ,hours of watching and studying should go into making the choice of which animal to take during the cull. The actual shot to kill the animal should be a mixture of emotions, satisfaction from the correct choice of animal and from the correct placement of the bullet that ensures a clean kill quickly,but also a tinge of sadness that a necessary cull animal has had to be killed.

I understand Deer culling ,but I dont think I could pull the Trigger .I used to love fishing for Salmon caught a few but did not like taking the Priest to its head .But Ill happily eat Venison or Salmon .Guess I,m a Just a big pussy,I did not like the shooting sequence .
Guys what is the rational for culling deer? ,who decides ? Is it on an estate by estate basis or is it on a national basis ?
I have no axe to grind on this just curious .
It seems to me that there are far more of them about than there used to be ,I am assuming that the deer fences are to keep the animals out of forestry / farming exetra .
It. Seems to me to be getting well dodgy getting around on the northern roads these days without real risk of hitting them.
I would NOT like to be "making time" in the dark these days
20 mph was as much as I could risk going to Scourie in the dark a wee while back
PACKER on here seems to collect them on his bike like flies

It is on an Estate to Estate basis,however most high ground estates dealing with Red deer are part of a deer management group.who discuss with each other the best numbers to take each year to ensure the population is kept in check,for various reasons,
The explosion of mainly roe deer seen on the roads has become a major problem, there are various reasons this has come about, grant schemes given to farmers/landowners a few years ago to plant areas with trees and hedges has created an ideal habitat for them.Also when new roads/motorways are created they plant bushes and trees on some embankments as a sort of green belt,this again is ideal habitat and really a bad idea.
As i am involved with deer in the course of my job,it is quite scary watching and knowing deer are always very close to the roads.Really a constant danger,albeit dawn and dusk are the peak times of movement.

The alternative to culling them is allowing them to reach a balance, ie mortality by starvation, RTA's etc. Surely it is better to achieve a balanced population by taking a harvest of the totally free range and completely organic surplus and getting it into the foodchain. There is a surplus in many..not all.. parts of the country. If so doing creates either economic enterprise for rural parts, and/or opportunity for a recreation enjoyed by thousands even better. I accept it may not suit some......so don't do it!
Looked at the shot properly now....a classic well placed heart shot.
Still probably further away than I would like, but it looked a hefty calibre.

By the look of things it was a stag that would struggle to see out another winter and since you can't pop it in the car and take it along to the vet like you would with an old dog a well placed shot from an expert is the only kindness you can offer an animal that is facing a lingering death.
Still made my eyes a bit damp however in much the same way that I am sure they will be again soon when our old dog has to be let go.
My understanding of the situation here however does not extend to condoning some hooray Hendry with no more chance of taking a clean kill than I have of getting the legendary blow job from Helen Mirren blasting off at a young fit stag that just happens to be sporting headgear that would look nice on his office wall. Nobody should be allowed to kill animals without a licence earned after demonstrating that they have the right attitude and expertise to do it in a humane way.

Long ago I remember paddling round Jura in the seventies lots of warning notices with "high velocity rifles" ( meaning keep off you !!) made me think these wannabe great white hunters what!!! grow up get a life shoot something that can fight back.
Doyle and I accept our promotion into the ranks of the rich and feckless, but point out that between us we have many fecks.
Bring back wolves. They can predate the deer and the odd huntsman!
