Took the daughter for a spin for a few hours on the bike, altered ESA no dramas. About 2 miles from home got ABS warning, pulled in and reset ignition, happened again half a mile later.

Got home to find no preload adjustment available on the ESA. Cycled ignition and restarted engine, ESA worked. Took a test ride and this time no speedo as well as the ABS warning. Speedo came on again 100 yards from home.

My GS911 reports :

23969 Rear Wheel Speed Sensor : Signal implausible
The fault is not present now.
23970 Rear Wheel Speed Sensor : Signal implausible
The fault is not present now.
54113 CAN-bus: No Communication with Vehicle Electronics (ZFE) control unit
The fault is not present now.

Pulled the rear speed sensor expecting an Xmas tree of swarf only to find it spotless, no play in bearings. Unclipped the sensor, a few tight cable ties here and there but no obvious external cable faults.

Anybody else had the same issues? An easy fix? (new sensor??) Bike is a 2008 Model Update GSA with ESA/IABS 2.

thanks

Adam

EDIT: Just dropped the FD oil into a clean jam jar to find it a cloudy mustard colour rather than clean and golden. I didn't record if I replaced the FD oil at the last service, but I think I did because of it being emulsified. Level hasn't increased due to water ingress past a seal (bike is not jet washed just a garden hose used.)

as per pm.
if the speed sensor turns out not to be faulty,it may be worth removing the tank and inspecting the main harness on the front left side,i had a very similar fault on an earlier machine .
the harness had been rubbing on the frame and had rubbed through the insulation on the can wiring(a pair of wires twisted together in the loom)this was causing comunication problems between the ECU,s.
worth a look see.
if you havnt ordered a sensor yet it would be worth measuring the sensor resistance,if you have a decent multi meter, just compare it with the front one they should be the same resistance.

Thanks Mike.

As the speedo was working intermittently I'll replace the sensor anyway as I don't trust the cable where it has been cable tied to the frame tightly. If that fails I shall check the twisted pair between controllers.

FD oil is beginning to clear as it stands overnight, Ill check it tomorrow evening for clouding/emulsion.

No bearing play or wear particles found.

The ECU mounts look very complicated - I was head scratching for ages. Also the multi pin plugs are a struggle to open.
The whole lot is tied to the subframe rear struts with two plastic clips that push sideways with a blunt ended flat screwdriver. Some of my wires were chafed but only through the outer covering.

My FD oil was changed last year. It came out clean. The stuff it replaced was horrible.

You could undo the FD top link and drop the FD back to check for water ingress. Into the drive tunnel.

Fitted a new rear ABS sensor, rest fault codes with GS911, took a test ride and everything back as it should be.

Result.

Thanks for the advice Mikeyboy. Just the mystery now of cloudy oil in 1600 miles since I last did a service??

I remember changing the oil in May due to emulsification as I had ridden a few miles through the flood waters. Perhaps a bit of moisture remained in the FD after draining/refilling? Now refilled again with fresh SAF-XO.

Gonna put my Robinair vacuum pump onto a jury-rigged jam jar and see if I can get it low enough to boil off the moisture at room temperature just to gauge roughly how much moisture is in the old oil. No seals are leaking out and I don't jet wash the bike so I can't see how water got in, if it goes milky again it'll be a rebuild with new bearings and seals.
