On the way back from my 600 mile service for my new 1200 ADV I had a blow out on the motorway yesterday. The ASC kicked in immediately. First I didn't know what had happened - thought the clutch had gone, then I realised I had a flat rear tyre and the ASC briefly kicked in. I must have been doing 85 miles an hour. After the engine renengage I could still steer the bike, it just wobbled a little. It was a very strange feeling when the ASC engaged and I wonder how the bike would have reacted without it when the puncture happened.

I will speak to my dealer on Monday. I wonder if the tyre is under warranty if no foreign object caused the puncture. Also, does the puncture need to be investigated by a BMW dealer or can I go to any tyre place to get this fixed?
Oh, and is it worth putting that stuff in the tyres that fixes any holes automatically? Lastly, amybody know how long I am entitled to take advantage of BMW's recovery service - is it linked to the warranty? I used them yesterday and they got me off the road within 60 minutes.

Incidentally, it was a pretty horrible day yesterday for road users in generel. I saw no less than 4 accidents, all but one on narrow country lanes between Northampton and London - 2 of which looked very nasty indeed. And today I read in the papers that there was a pile up on the M25 with fatalities when a truck swerved across lanes. 5 bikers and 3 cars were involved.

I hate seeing and hearing about these things - always gives me nightmares for a few days. Be safe out there!

Good to hear your ok :) , and glad to know the ASC works when needed. Ordered it on my new GSA, had it cut in once when cornering on road from an off road jaunt where the rear tyre was covered in mud.

Unfortunately, and not surprisingly, it didn’t help me yesterday when I lost the front end on a greasy road, no warning – wosh, slide  . Crash bar and Panniers took the impact.

Not sure about the warranty on tyres, but its certainly worth getting them to check it if there is no obvious damage!

I think you are covered for 2 years with recovery?

Good luck :thumb2

I think you are referring to Ultraseal. If you do a search on the board as it has been debated at length in the past;)

Problem with any tire going flat is did you ride on the uninflated tire very long???

You said "Blowout"....
There is definately a difference between a tire going down while driving and a tire "blowingout"...sounds more like you might have had a tire going down if you believe it can be repaired.

Riding on the sidewalls of an uninflated tire will be reason to suspect a more dangerous/serious condition can occur if you think about having it repaired.
This condition is called a "Zipper Rupture" and can delay or not allow the proper repair of the tire in question.

........glad your safe tho, and hope you get back on the road soon!

Recovery is definately 2 years... I had to use it 13 months after I bought my bike, so I asked :thumb

Cheers

I put ultraseal into all four tires of two 12GSs for a 10,000 mile trip from London to Nepal, at least 1,000 of those miles was off-road and not one puncture. I would definitely recommend it.

The only bike to have a puncture (and it was more than one puncture actually) out of 8 on the ride to Gambia was fitted with Ultraseal.

Nasty stuff.....and your local tyre fitter chappy will hate you for using it.

I've had a success rate of 0 out of 2 with Ultraseal. I think a better option is to carry a tubeless repair kit, with which my success rate has been 2 / 2 so far :)

How do you know? if you've got this slimy stuff in your wheel, if it's saved a puncture or not, short of pulling a nail out of the tyre, that is.
You can say "I've got this stuff in my tyre and I've never had a puncture", but you may not have got a puncture anyway!

I only get punctures when the the bikes fully loaded, in me garage, ready for a early start to the Dragon or somewhere. Then I have a flat tyre. I fixed that, though - I load the bike in the morning, just before I leave - no problem.

Ordered 07 1200GS with TPM (tire pres. monitor); supposed to go yellow if low, red if sudden pressure loss; perhaps will give me some heads up if happens and not catastrophic.

I can answer that...

I had a blow out on a 1100GS I test rode just as the 1150 Adventure was being brought out.

Be blow out, there was enough of a hole in the rear tyre that I could see through the tyre to the wheel rim inside without a torch.

Tyre went somewhere between 90-100 the result being a slight weaving, all controllable. It got steadily worse as I dropped the speed until about 20-30 and I was seriously thinking of jumping off - didnt have to though, managed to get the speed down and the bike over to the side of the motorway and stopped without dropping it.

I think this was all down to the sheer size of the bars rather than any electronic gizmos, the bars made it possible to keep the bike in a straight line when the rear wheel wanted to do anything but...

Anyway... all thanks to BVM for collecting thier bike off the M4 and recovering me back as well all without any expense on my part!
