picked my new bike up - 1200Gs with premium so with chrome exhaust. header pipes already very noticeably blue and brown over top 6 inches. I did 80 miles never going over 5000 rpm , typically cruising at 3500 and with around 25 miles of it on the motoway at 55 -70mph. Have read the threads on blueing and general opinion is that its unavoidable but so much after just 80 miles ? Is it possible the bike is running weak ? I suppose what I'm looking for is any other new 2010 engine owners (or anyone else) giving their experience. BTW - fantastic bike :)

Blueing of the pipes is a cunning and specially designed method to indicate that the cylinder is firing properly.

Relax and enjoy.

Don't worry, it's perfickly normal.

After your first service you can play the "What colour can I make the pipes" game..

Its normal and looks nice IMHO.

Probably want to stop doing running in on the motorway though.

Mine's just the same!!

Picked my new one up on Wednesday. After about 80 miles, just the same as reported here.
Nice to learn that the pipe colour indicates whether the mix is right. Not running too rich then, eh? That also pretty much indicates my position now I've paid out for the new bike (and the extras!!). :D

thanks guys - helps to my mindf at rst and carry on with the a happy riding on my Beautiful Burbling Bloody Big BMW Bike.

Read your owners Manual re running in.

Yup. keep the engine working as much as possible, uo and down the rev range, gradually increasing revs in line with the running in guidance.

I thacked mine for the first 100 miles, keeping under 500 revs. Sweet.

Oh no I've wrecked my bike by spending 25 miles on a motorway with continuously varying throttle 50 -70mph. Just wanted to get home 90 miles guys at 5pm on a Friday evening. All the rest will be up hill down dale - we 've got a few of those up here......

BTW I have noticed there are huge debates about running in styles raging all over various forums - its a very grey area and best not be dogmatic about it.

My pipes went bright blue after about 50 miles and it looked great. Sadly after 1200 miles they've dulled off quite a bit. Still blue but not as bright.

With regards to running in, it is a grey area regarding the amount of revs you use, but I don't think there's any doubt you need to work your engine, so motorway stints are pretty much a no no, even varying your revs isn't really working/loading your engine. However 25 miles isn't that much so I wouldn't worry about it, it is difficult to completely avoid motorways and dual carriageways :thumb2

Is it the header pipes that are chrome on the option list or is it the exhaust only? I have ordered mine with the chrome option and was just wondering.

It's the chrome header pipes that go blue. I think the standard ones go more yellowy/brown, but I'm sure someone with the standard ones will correct me if I'm wrong.

The owners manual is specific, not at all Grey.
It details the loading per KM right up until the process stops @ 900km 562.5 Miles

Simples

Best regards Stretch

True but I don't think he was quoting the manual when he said
it was a grey area, meerly that there are a lot of different opinions, hence making it a grey area.
I follow the manual's advice, after all it's been written by the folk who built the damn thing. The beauty with the latest manual is that their advice is not to treat the bike with kid gloves, which makes the running-in process much more fun than other bikes I've owned :thumb2
