BMW Adventure OEM Black Panniers

I recently bought a 2016 GS Adventure and purchased a BMW Aluminium Top Box. I have only been out a few times and already the aluminium is pitted and I suppose corroding!! I didn't expect that but reading various posts, yes, it would appear they all do that sir!!!

Anyway, I still have to purchase panniers and want to go down the line of BMW ones as well,but wondered if the BMW 'Black' panniers fared any better in the corrosion stakes??? I have searched but couldn't find any info so thought I would ask the question.

My ally top box was going that way so I hadn’t it wrapped. When I came to sell it , the wrapping was removed and the box was like new. Looks good and provides protection. Think BMW had a lot of complaints over the ally ones hence introducing black, which do look better, but no idea how they fare in the salty weather

Like everything else you need to protect them against corrosion, I rapped mine with the panels from humvee. The parts that didn't get rapped I applied ACF50.

I have OEM black panniers on my 2018 GSA and one of the reasons I went for black was because I havent been happy with the way the standard pannier finish has deteriorated on my previous GSA. However my black panniers leak like a sieve and according to my dealer, who refused to replace them, the word 'waterproof' doesnt mean they keep out water. So buy the inner bags as well

Agree with other posters though. The Bumot and Holan panniers are probably better constructed and certainly cheaper but then you've got the hassle of separate keys and with the Holans, a different mounting frame too

The Bumot defender evo system €900 includes...
Complete and ready to install - the system contains the following:

- Set of panniers - either 45 Ltr or 40Ltr or 35Ltr
- Set of Pannier Frames
- Integrated Locking Toolbox

the panniers will fit to the standard BMW pannier rails (but I’m not sure about the tool box. As I see it, strip off the standard BMW rails and flog them to offset the cost of the bumot ones.

Their 41Ltr (bigger than the BMW one) is 300 and fits to the standard BMW rear rack

All of these come in basic aluminium or anodised either black or grey.

I’ll be getting these with my next bike

I might get them for my existing bike........ I bought a set of adventure panniers off here and they where never watertight.

The BMW ones, though manufactured by touratech are renowned for letting in water.

Looks like if you intend to keep your stuff dry you may need to splash out on bmw liners or the cheaper ones and maybe drill a small hole at the bottom to let the water out.

Well, I'm delighted to say that over a few years and many miles, none of the ones I've owned have let in a drop of water.
