I'm moving the BMW version of the Akrapovic R1200GS exhaust on my new R1250 but have been told by dealer that the carbon heat shield has broken off when removing. Will I notice a big difference without it does anyone know/have a view ? Apparently £150+ for the part - so I wont be buying a new one....but might scout around for a 2nd hand one perhaps ?

Thoughts ?

Why not get it repaired, I know a guy in Norfolk who can do good job, he repairs CF cycle frames, for his day job, but has done a couple of repairs for me.

I can't really blame the dealer tbh, it looks like tiny spot welds and the bike has been through 25k of shitty weather. It doesnt look to tricky to spot weld it though - just got some pics through.

If the spot welds have failed prematurely, then the manufacturer should replace or repair. I had a heat shield fall off a Beowulf exhaust when the studs it was fastened to broke away from the exhaust due to obviously poor welds. They replaced the link pipe part of the exhaust immediately and without question - excellent customer service.

It’s over 2yrs old and its an exhaust......so I don’t think I’d have any luck with claiming a replacement tbh.

Just an idea, why not drill through where the spot welds where, and then let the little bolts just come half way through the holes, and then fill the hole with weld,, would be more secure, I think.

Sounds like a plan, I’ll let you know how I get on......or more likely my pal gets on..
