Anyone now the details of the standard factory alarm immobiliser fitted to a 2009 GSA please?

Trying to get some insurance quotes for a 2009 GSA and the insurance website is asking for details of the alarm/immobiliser thats fitted as standard.

Thanks.

Normally the option to choose is 'factory fit'. When I got quotes for mine that's what I chose or 'none' if that wasn't available. It didn't make much difference.

A mate owned an RSV Mille R Factory with a Meta alarm on it that was identical in all respects to the standard BMW alarm, even the key fobs were the same. Odd that his alarm was Thatcham approved yet the BMW one wasn't despite its uncanny (identical) likeness.

Probably more to do with BMW not submitting it for approval as opposed to it not being good enough.
No idea if their car alarms are approved or not.

Over here (NL) the BMW alarm will be ART approved, provided the dealer fits a steel plate over the alarm unit.

I believe that for an alarm to be 'Thatcham approved' and to enjoy any possible insurance discount, then the alarm has to 'auto activate' or be 'passively armed' when the ignition is switched off. If you have the option of turning this function off, then this is not an apporved alarm. It's most likely that the Meta alarm has this function disabled ??

This Thatcham document goes into all the details

A SIM card tracker should be more effective in a theft than an alarm and more reliable in the bike starting stakes.

Thatcham approved https://trakking.net/

One question - How well do any of these work when the bike is inside a metal van.

When getting online insurance quotes I'm constantly asked if the GSA has an immobiliser, and then asked for the manufacturers name. So does anyone know the brand of alarm/immobiliser that BMW use as BMW doesnt feature on the insurance companies drop down list of brands.

when I played about with the ebike web site I was getting as much reduction by putting down an approved bloody thick chain and lock as an aftermarket alarm, I can appreciate some want a warning if their bike is moved or lifted but at least with a chain you can take it for the next bike too!

i fit datatool trakking trackers and they can be moved and reregestered to another bike and as for being in the back of a van they use GPS,GSM and radio giving them a thatcham TDQ6

Mine has an F-off chain but it's very heavy to carry with the bike. Some people leave a lock locked to where they park the bike. But it's easily gummed up with superglue or thread lock. The when the owner arrives and can't lock their bike it's an easy steal.

Thanks for the data took info. My bike has quit a few extras declared of course but still a major hassle to replace everything.

Mine worked very well, telling me (and the tracker monitor fellows) that the bike was trundling along from London E1 to Battersea. Of course the tracker bods didn't know it was in a van but I did. SIM card based; if it can get a phone signal, it will work. It's pretty sensitive too. Mine triggers within a metre or two, if the bike is moved without the key in the ignition.
