BMW Alarm not working

My newly acquired 04 GS is fitted with the BMW alarm. Both remotes don't seem to do anything, no flashing of indicators, no LED. Checked the batteries and synchronised the remotes - thankfully doesn't affect operation of bike, anybody got any ideas what could be causing this?

no LED = not working at all, I believe.

If that is the case then I don't think you can synch them to the alarm? Or are you rerring to the LED on the bike not the fob ?

If that is the case I think I recall reading that synchronising the fobs requires a visit to a BMUU dealer? I did a quick search but could not find the thread.

Hopefully someone else will be along shortly with more definitive answers for you ...

Are you parked next to a mini cab office or anywhere else with a radio transmitter? If so push the bike 200 metres down the road and it might work. It has for me with a datatool alarm. I have never used the BMW alarm. Good luck.

For what it's worth.

If I park my bike and leave it for, say, half an hour, then come back to set the alarm: Zip - Nothing happens.

If I arm the alarm as soon as I stop it works fine.

I can only assume the canbus going to sleep, which it does after X or Y minutes or seconds (who cares) takes the alarm sensor down with it. No doubt all is revealded in the manual

As I never use the alarm I am not much bothered.

The bike still needs the key to start the thing. If the thief is determind enough he will pinch the bike, with or without an alarm. As the stolen bike is probably going to be stripped for parts, the loss of just the key coded ECU is not going to be much of a worry to the toe rag.

Wapping - I agree with you but the alarm came with the bike so I would like to use the siren to alert me if any toe rags try to half inch it in the night. I thought it might be something to do with the canbus but I have tried setting the alarm just after switching off the ignition and still nothing.

Bones - not an issue unless you count fridge freezers!

Gabby - cheers for that, I have this information in the manual that came with bike and will try it tomorrow.


The 'book' states that the alarm turns itself off after 7 days to conserve
battery power so it would be no good for long term storage. I am just wondering if it is faulty.

Hi

Try pointing the fob towards the pavillion seat.Thats where the alarm thing resides.Mine is a bit tricky too.You must also keep a short distance to the bike like 1-2 meters.

Have you tried to check to see if the alarm is indeed connected?

Its a fairly simple process to get to, if you take your time.

Take off pillion seat, remove the top box plates and 'plinthe'.

Remove 6(IIRC) screws holding the silver plastic that sits beneath pillion seat.

Remove carefully (a couple of bolts from holding the 'plinthe' will fall out somewhere. Collect and put to one side.

Once the silver plastic is off, you should have access to the alarm. Its a square box about 4 x 2 inches sitting to just in front of the rear brake, slightly to the right of the bike. There is a square computer styled connector that plugs into it from the left.

(oh yea, it'll have META stamped on it too).
