Hi,i am thinking of fitting a BMw alarm to my new 1200.Has anyone got one of these fitted, and/or can someone explain the pro's and con's of them as opposed to another type.
Thanks in advance.
The BMW alarm is cheap and cheerful. Compared to a Datatool it's not very sensitive, and won't get you an insurance discount from most companies.
You can configure it to arm automatically or not, which is nice. You don't need the fob to disarm it, as it recognises the coded ignition key. So if you set it to arm automatically, you wouldn't need the fob at all, I suppose.
Personally I hate bike alarms, I don't really know why I bought the BMW one, but I would have hated a Datatool more
i have bmw alarm on my 1200, i got the bike second hand it was fitted, it was off when i got it and it has been off ever since but still carry fob all the time as i dont trust in to stay that way....buy a good lock nobody that any notice of them anyway. they will run the battery flat if you dont use the bike in the winter.
I was offered the option of specifying the BMW alarm on my bike but decided agaist it as it was not thatchem approved and therefore not acceptable to insurance companies for discounts.
If you do want an alarm I'd look at some of the 2aftermarket" options which are approved.
If you want an alarm, spend your money on a Datatool - at least you'll get a robust (relatively), sensative alarm that would give an insurance discount. I'd say the only benefit that the BMW alarm has is that you don't need the fob.
<<has to disagree with GSMonkey... I'd say get a Meta alarm.
also Thatcham approved, but FAR better than Datatool IMHO
(had a Meta on my last bike.... less fiddly than datatools on mates bikes, but still Thatcham approved)
I dont have an alarm on the GS, as I really dont see the point of them (insurance insisted on alarm on my aprilia)
I've got an Acumen Cat 1 on my SV650 and i'm very happy with it. You can set it to automatically arm the immobilerser only after you turn the ignition off so that you have no awkward garage forecourt, outside garage, stop to chat moments as it beeps and you're sat on a timebomb!! Fully armed at a push of the button. The fob can take a flick out key if you like to save space which is always fun as you flick it out approaching your bike, gangsta stylee Should be no more than £300. You can also set a clever pin in case anything fails or you lose your fob, whatever. Recommended!
