BMW Alluminium Panniers: Powder Coating??

I want to have my ally panniers powdercoated but need to remove the plastic before the chap puts them into the oven

Is this possible? Has anyone tried this (I searched through previous threads but havnt been able to find anything to solve my problem yet).

Im happy to bin the plastic corners but am worried that they wont be as waterproof if I remove/replace the strip seal (I use inner bags so was never that fussy about them being bone dry).

Is it doable? ..... or am I better off just leaving them the way BMW intended?

Has anyone drilled out the rivets and then (after painting) reinstated the plastic corners/lip with a pop rivet gun?

Not sure this is doable

The rivets are probably stainless, so will be a pain in the butt to drill out. Just lacquer over the lot of it if you want shiney. Powder coat probably won't stay on there forever anyway

Where did you get the vinyl (it looks like that special stuff that looks black in daylight but reflective red at night .. had a pair of honda wings on my old Pan European that did that)?

Was it difficult to do? .. well worth it IMHO

Failing that ill lacquering them instead.

If you do paint the plastic corners use etch primer first, it will help prevent shearing of the paint.

Sorry that this reply is a year late.

Had them covered by the sign writer in Southampton next door to Nice Baps sandwich shop, couple of doors away from Infinty.

Total cost to me was £120, took the guy a day to do the measuring but now has a template.

He will post you the complete kit for less than £100.

Even cheaper if you don't want reflective, mine has black (which reflects white at night) on the top, side and front and red reflective on the back as you can't show a white light to the rear.

He can do you a kit in just about any colour you want.

Seem to remember his name is Dave, ring Infinity, they will give you his number as he does a lot of bikes through them.
