BMW Approved Oil and best place to buy it...5w40?

Sure, it's easy to find, but do you pay AUD 22/litre?

It's not $22 a litre, the second option is $17 for 1 litre and $53 for 4 litres. The cheapest I pay is $69 for 4 litres unless it's on special

If you think the UK is expensive then come over here for a holiday!

I think I should withdraw this suggestion, as although one of the reviews states that it meets the JASO and API specs I can't find any definitive information from Halfords to confirm this. I have never used it myself.

I have used the Castrol Power 1 Racing oil in the past and the following is the information on this from Castrol's web site:

Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 5W-40
Co-Engineered with BMW Motorrad*
Description
Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 5W-40 is fully synthetic 4-stroke engine oil for modern high performance sports bikes that increases engine
acceleration and power right up to max rpm.
Its Race Derived Technology based on Castrol’s racing history and testing experience ensures maximum engine performance without
sacrificing engine durability thus giving a significant benefit over other types of engine oils.
Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 5W-40’s formula employs the very latest Trizone Technology™ for 4-stroke motorcycles, so as to give optimum
protection of the engine, clutch and gears even under the most arduous riding conditions including sustained operation at high rpm.
Application
Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 5W-40 is suitable for all modern high performance motorcycle engines where API and or JASO specifications are
recommended. It is specially approved by BMW for K1600, K1300, K1200 models, S1000 RR, G450X. It can be used in several motorcycle
gearboxes, where delivers excellent clutch performance.
Advantages
- Ultimate performance in extreme riding – oil flows fast and stays strong, reducing internal engine friction
- Tested and proven to deliver exceptional acceleration at the touch of the throttle
- Fully synthetic 4-stroke motorcycle engine oil featuring Trizone Technology™
- Race Derived Technology for max engine acceleration.
- Extreme high temperature air-cooled and water-cooled engine performance.
- Excellent high speed oil consumption control and volatility.
- Excellent shear stability to prevent viscosity break down.
- Complies with requirements of catalyst equipped engines

I read the spec and it say nothing about wet clutches or the magic JASO-MA/MA2 bit. I scrimped and used car shop 10W-40 in a Tiger 955i I owned. I later had to replace the clutch plates after terminal clutch slip set in.

I ran a Yamaha Diversion 900 for about 40,000 miles on turbo diesel spec oil. The OEM oil spec is also JASO MA.

I never had any problems with clutch slip despite it being a barge of a bike. The clutch started to slip at 70,000 miles. The old friction plates were at the minimum thickness. New plates for £55, an hour's work and all was well again. The bike always had to be started in gear or suffer a horrible crash into first gear. It mad no difference whether I used bike spec JASO MA or the much lower cost turbo diesel semi synthetic - which actually beat the JASO MA spec.

why would you want to skimp out on a few quid on oil on a 15k bike? dont buy the cheapest shite you think will do ..buy the best at the cheapest price Motul 300v its the best no question and wouldn't use anything else

I'm inclined to agree with you on price why use 50p oil in a top dollar bike. The choice of oil is much more a personal choice. The debate could run forever. JJH

300v is nearly double the price of Castrol Power 1 Racing which was the BMW recommended oil so personally I don't see a need to change over but to each is own. Also I change my oil every 5000klms.

Castrol Power 5w40 was the oil originally specified by BMW when the LC models were introduced and no Shell oils were recommended as being suitable , two years later BMW introduce their own branded (Shell) oil and officialy Castrol oils (the one they specified ) no longer becomes suitable for use in the LC models !!!!

Find a decent known brand SAE 5W40 Synthetic motorcycle (wet clutch compatible) oil , even expensive oil is cheaper than rebuilding an engine

Who said they aren't suitable? Any oil meeting the minimum specs is suitable.

In my case BMW did. I have it in writing from BMW that if I do not use their oil then any related warranty claim will be rejected. They will not accept use of oil that meets or exceeds the specifications in the user manual supplied with the bike.

Don't shoot the messenger here. I am as incredulous as many that read this will be and have my own opinions. They don't count when it comes to warranty claims hassle which I wish to avoid.

Unofficialy my dealer said it would be fine to continue to use the castrol oil BUT they showed me a copy of a BMW service bulletin stating that only the BMW own brand (Shell ) oil can be used (within the BMW dealer network) , so the oil that was used in my bike from new for its 600 and then its 6000 mile services becomes officially unsuitable overnight .

Question is 'Is it worth risking a warranty claim ?'

i think opie are selling 300v 2 x 2ltr for £40, i paid a lot less and bought 40ltr, enough to keep 3 bikes going for a few yrs, it might be a bit over kill but my trackday mates swear by it and put me onto it when i told em about the gearbox issues, It does feel smoother with the gear change and with the quick shifter

you are conflating a commercial decision (only use a specified Shell product in a BMW branded workshop) and an engineering specification. It quite clearly says in the manual to use Advantec or if that is not available a branded oil meeting MA2 etc. BMW issued this mandate to stop customers bringing in their own Castrol/Motul oil etc. as this would a) probably breach their deal with Shell and b) reduce their profits.

Not sure how it works in the UK but BMW could easily be sued for stating that. At least here in Australia they could and they wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Much like not allowing you to take your bike to an independent service agent, of course they can't do warranty work but they can service your bike.

What Wessie already replied, I take that to mean they want only the BMW authorised service agents to use their recommended oils. I don't see how this means using other oils would create warranty issues unless they are below the required spec.

Fair enough and of course 300v is great oil. Have you tried the same bike with the Castrol and then the 300v to see the difference?

Agreed.
300V all the way. By far the best oil i have ever used.
It transformed the gearshift on my GL1800 and has been amazing on every bike i´ve used it on.

Same spec as BM oil for RT WC

I am NOT confusing anything I know exactly what the bulletin means and I also know that there are much better quality oils on the market than the rebranded Shell /BMW oil but for a bike especially one within the initial warranty period I wouldn't take the risk because as it is well known that if you use the wrong oil the paint will flake off your engine casings and you will not get your shiny new engine fitted .
