BMW AUX LIGHT SWITCH FAILURE POLL

I disagree - most don't work because the switch rocker fails to press the microswitch in behind it far enough in to operate the switch.
Hence the comment about using a cable tie. But if yours works with switch cleaner, that's good.

Is it the switch that's mounted on it's side, ON TOP of the LHS switch gear?? If it is, personally, I reckon they look shite. Just look like a Friday afternoon, run out of ideas, bodge...

IMHO of course.

I have one of those ebay switches* I posted earlier. It looks fine. Although you can't see it ATM because it's hidden by one of Val H's Muffs :P:P

*I believe vendors on here sell them. Possibly Mr Wassal himself

2010 21000 miles. Both my left and right failed recently. I opened both up and all micros looked fine, rubber boot was not perished so no idea but indicators would randomly flash. Replaced both.

All other buttons worked fine. I have the 2 I took off for sale as spares or repair if anyone keen. £45 both

Yes, you have it right. Some may prefer a little bodge as you mention and get them working. The micro switches are very cheap...its just the fiddly job and delivery is almost as costly. They may or may not work with a bit of contact spray or whatever else people have lying around. I didn't bother too much. I just swapped them over. Maybe peeps can use the other micros (isn't that bodging?) apart from indicators...and save being ripped off by a dealer for 160 odd each. Or wait ages for second hand stock to come in to Sherlocks. BTW, I agree with the rant. 3 years...adventure bike and a little switch fails...tough bike..yes we can repair and get by, we shouldn't have to for a 30 month old bike and from new piece of kit..

Couldn't tell you - the knob lights on mine never get switched on.

2008 GSA with 14K miles only used for holidays and cosseted so much the engine is a tight as a duck's bottom. but the afterthought spot lights switch only works when pressed down. It probably needs the fix with milk carton packing to properly push the switch across.

My 38K 2008 GSA is working fine (ATM) though the oil light keeps flickering randomly.

I recently rewired my spotlights so they come on with the main beam, and removed the handlebar switch from the circuit.

It wasn't faulty, they're aftermarket lights and switch and it's a GS not a GSA so it can't go on the poll.... :augie

Mine failed.....fixed under warranty. As it's a "known fault" they (BMW) really shouldn't have the cheek to screw you for the inflated cost of a the part when out of warranty. No one minds (well, I suspect some would:D) paying a reasonable price for said switch out of waranty...

So in summary:

It looks like the switches are not up to the job but no worries as providing you have a smidgen of people skills your BMW dealer will change FOC or even change FOC for you without you realising you had a problem in the fisrt place...

I'm not sure whats less that a smidgen but life must be sh1te if thats all you've got :-)

Vines Redhill BMW knew i had a problem, i did have a smidgen of people skills, and wrote to them and customer services to voice my displeasure at the obsolescence that such a product has. They didn't wan't to know cos I had my bike serviced outside of dealer network. So basically spend loads there, get some good will back at a later stage...I think its good will from the delaer to keep you in favour with the delaer, not goodwill from dealer to keep you in favour of BMW brand...

Mind you, next time I am spending money in a dealership, I'll be sure to make them aware of the goodwill I am giving them:aidan

AIUI, the problem is not with the switch - It is the plastic rocker that doesn't quite press hard enough on the switch to reliably turn it 'on'. A plastic shim can be fabricated (at more or less zero cost) to get things working.
