I recently bought a R1200GS which comes with the BMW breakdown recovery service has anyone used it and what exactly does it cover as I was thinking do I have the right cover

It will cover you for a blown light bulb. The mechanic will come and change it for you :thumb

I haven't used it on the GS, but in my F650CS was recovered to dealer for an intermittent cut out issue and also for a flat tyre where the repair kit didn't work, both times I was offered a car if I needed it.

I believe that they might not recover a vehicle from a Payage (Toll road) in France - although this is not from personnal experience, just some comments read on this forum.

Juts be aware that they will sometimes send a car trained lubricant monkey (BMW mechs are too clean to be called grease monkeys) out to review the issue and to see if a quick fix is possible before they send a recovery vehicle.

If you are in the AA or RAC etc & its only a recovery service that BMW are offering you don't waste your money as the latter will also recover your bike aswell as your car in the event of a breakdown thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

It's a pretty good service and - as you got it 'free' with your bike - it's good value.

You should have a booklet setting out all the terms. If you do not have one contact your local BuMW dealer who will get you one.

When the BuMW cover expires (usualy at the end of the warranty period) you have a choice.

Stick with BuMW (it will include other extended warranty covers, ie many parts and the cost of repair following mechanical failure)

OR

Swith to AA / RAC / Green Flag. These latter three will provide a very good recovery service in UK and / or Europe but will not cover parts (or labour) and will, of course, cover you for all your vehicles, not just your BuMW motorcycle.

Most / all recovery companies will not provide this service, either.

The reason is very simple.

The owners of the motorways own the franchise to recover vehicles on their motorways, so BuMW, AA, EuropAssist etc. do not have to.

Or, aren't allowed to, so the road owner can charge whatever they like :mmmm

Is the bike brand new?
If it is then everything you can poke a stick at is covered, parts, labour etc even abroad, except if one runs out of petrol they will bring you some but will need to be paid for(only fair).
In my expierience the service works pretty well, they will arrange for a car, accomodation if your machine cannot be repaired(IIRC within 4 hours, but may be longer)
Best thing to do is read your docs.
If it is an extended warranty,i.e bike over 2YO just make sure you have been put on the system by giving Mondial a call,I have the extended warranty and when I had cause to use, just this week,I was not on the system.See my post in the Gasthaus and Bunker forum

"I believe that they might not recover a vehicle from a Payage (Toll road) in France" - I would be very surprised if this was true - it would destroy a major part of the purpose of the service for many of us. ( The word is 'peage' incidentally.) I will read all the small print but I am pretty sure I am right! In any case because it is a BMW service that just means BMW will foot the bill although the actual rescue vehicle or mechanic could come from a local garage;

The BMW/Mondial Warranty Booklet states this..................but so will any other providers.

EDIT ..Oh well that was a waste of time ..............

basically says you will have to get recovered by the designated recovery agent via the SOS phones and then arrange to be seen to by Mondial

I used the recovery service a couple of weeks ago and the service was awsome. Very good indeed. Pity the bikes are not as reliable.

Bad experience

(08 GSA)

broke down.
BMW recovery people all busy, so they sent out a third party recovery company who were simply instructed to recover, not fix, the bike (fine by me) until an idiot with attitude (a bad combination) turned up and started to strap the bike down onto the trailer via the handle bar grips, OH YES! during which time we had a five minute verbal battle as i knew this was wrong. I lost, i thought the bars were going to snap he put so much pressure on them. It was a trick from his old motorcross days he said ! The W_N_ER.
Off he went and when he delivered to dealer he had snapped the throttle grip, damaged the other grip and scratched the offside ali tank panel. Lucky for me the dealer saw how it was strapped down when he delivered it into their workshop.

After 11 weeks, numerous phonecalls and two letters the dealer eventually had agreement from BMW that the parts could be supplied and fitted F.O.C., But why is everything a battle with BMW.

During this period, they sent me the normal 'how good were we at recovering your vehicle' questionair, which i completed and for good measure attached a comprehensive letter. Some nine weeks later, have they contacted me to apologise, or tell me that due to new measures this can never happen again ......... what do you think ? :augie

Yes, it could well be a one off and we all make mistakes but i just think this is so, so dissapointing BMW, its just not what i would have expected ....... or is that me being naive.......... :(

"....But why is everything a battle with BMW...." This is not my ex^perience at all - I have owned BMW's, new and secondhand for over 30 years and one of the reasons that I have stuck with them is the courtesy (apart from good service) I receive from the "average" BMW dealers; I am often quite shocked at how other dealers treat their customers.

For a freebie with the bike its great and very handy if you fuel pump controller goes as mine did. Bloke came out thumbed the stater a few times went into the back of the car got a new one out and hey presto, all sorted.

As for the people on the phone its like all the recovery companies, sometimes you get the muppet, sometimes the master - BMW are no different in that respect.

Cheers
Johnny

BMW Assist response

First post, because my 2008 GSA has just failed to start with the dreaded EWS message.
BMW assist came within the hour and strapped a spare ring antenna onto the bike, so its runnning again.
A call to SBW in Hertford and it will be changed this Friday (the first day I can get it there).

Pity it failed but I can't fault the service recovery.

Nice to have, or essential to have? I'm beginning to wonder.

I think that if you are going on ny long journey these days some sort of recovery service is essential. Repairs by the roadside are longrer the 'norm' and even minor faults often can only be corrected by a dealer. The BMW breakdown cover (free for the first two years) is expensive to continue , although I believe it has recently become cheaper; if you are a member of the BMW Club you will probaly deal with www.warrantydirect.co.uk
