...or is this some serious shabby build quality. Not something you would expect on a 14 grand machine. Anyone else have something like this on their bike?

Woah! That doesn't look great. I know there was a thread on the ADV rider site that show one or two holes that do actually need to be there, but from memory they looked a lot neater than yours.

No, it's not just you and it is one of the 'faults' I picked out , supported by photos, and posted on here a while back after having the WC as a 'loan bike'. The general consensus from those that had shelled out for a WC appeared to be one of total acceptance for this, how shall I put it , shyte finish.

I think you are on a hiding to nothing by pointing this out. :D

I agree the welding has been done by Fred in his shed and shit splatter everywhere deffo no quality control unless the feckers blind and as you state not what you expect paying 15 large.

I looks just like my first weld I did on saturday after 10 years not touching a welder within 10 mins I had the hang of it again

It looks like the weld gun has melted through the joint (excessive heat) that may cause future durability concerns I.e fatigue. I would be going back to bmw with that one for sure

I look in on this board every day, reading reviews of the old bike and the new one, trying to convince myself that the bike for me is a new liquid cooled BMW R1200GS.

Then I see things like this on a new bike that is supposed to be manufactured by a premium company and sold for £14000.

BMW should hang their heads in shame if they think this is acceptable quality. If it were mine, I would be straight back and demand a new bike.

To anyone that trots out the old shit about nothing being perfect, well if you keep accepting things like this, it,s never going to get better is it. BMW and the Emperors new clothes !

Disgraceful and completely unacceptable.
I am certain that BMW will see you right. They will be very ashamed that it got out of their door, let alone showing you Brits their balls up.

Reminds me of my first Blade with holes drilled in the fairing for lightness but the japs did a better job of it :D

No shit welds on my CrossTourer

The cross tourer is a nice bike. I test rode the explorer, the vfr and the gs (rode the gs last) and although I am slightly biased the gs, IMHO, was in a different league. I had already made my mind up on the way to the bmw dealer that I was going to keep the r1 because I liked both bikes but i liked certain things about the vfr that the honda did better than the triumph and vice versa.

The gs had the best bits of both bikes. Had the cross tourer had the electronics package of the bmw it would probably have been a different story. Build quality of the honda is definately one of its strong points

I was very disappointed with the triumph I was expecting it to be amazing. I was also put off by some major issues the the triumph guys were experiencing on the forums....a bloody good job I never found this place

I feel that there are three minor things related to build quality that let the gs down on mine. There a couple of specs in the paintwork on the tubing on one side of the bike. I know it's not much but I'd expect no blemishes

The plastics under the seat look pretty tacky when you look close up. Not what you would expect on such an expensive machine

Finally, the paint where the top box sits scratches incredibly easily. I have a tiny scratch (cant see it with the top box bracket on). I only brushed it slightly with an Allen key and it marked

I have since put helicopter tape over all the silver paintwork on the sides to prevent paint coming off over time. You can't notice it and it will keep the bike pristine

Ill just balance this post by saying the bike is truly awesome machine. It has the best bits of the cross tourer and explorer in one bike. There are a couple of very minor niggles but ill be keeping her for a very long time :)

So there I am munching away on my bacon and sausage bap from the burger van parked next to Hein Gerrick on the A40. As I'm standing there admiring the bike, that's when I notice this great fekkin hole on the tube. Seriously unamused you might say.

So I thought I'd ask you peeps and get your general consensus on it. I didn't want to stroll into the dealers to be given the typical garbage reply of "they all look like that Sir" :blagblah Thanks for your input guys :thumb2

Yeah, I will be heading back to BMW Oxford when I get the chance this week. I just know they will try and pass this off as a non-event. Just need to head there with some steely determination and a no-nonsense attitude.

I'll let you know what they say.....

Stay tuned :popcorn

I agree, that has definitely blown through, it's not meant to be there the holes are irregular, if they were drain holes of some kind? they would have a circular/machined appearance. A failure waiting to happen.

From the BMW site:-

These bikes are Unstoppable, and they are the very machines that make journeys, like Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Round and Long Way Down, possible.

BMW Motorrad''s Enduro range features ground-breaking engineering...

Looks like they got one bit right... :blast
