BMW Build Quality. Is it me...?

That is appalling, something you may see on a £700 chinese bike:eek:

BMW have really dropped the ball with the 12GS WC:tears

...or is this some serious shabby build quality. Not something you would expect on a 14 grand machine. Anyone else have something like this on their bike?

I would take it back to the dealer and get them to look at it, take some pics and send them onto BMW for comment - if they think that there is a structural integrity issue then I am sure that they will deal with it.

Oh wow - that is pretty shocking.

I had a good hard look at my bike before it was pdi'd at at the dealers.
Thankfully found nothing at all - I would have rejected that.

Ask the dealer to comment first - see what they say...
It isn't a quality finish at all - and could very easily come under the "not of merchantable quality" tag.
But don't just dive in - keep really really calm and friendly - they will be more likely to listen if you stay perfectly calm.
As much as we want to have a good rant - it doesn't really help matters.

Simply have a chat with the service bod, point ithe flaw out to them and ask if they think that it is acceptable.

Give them a chance to sort it out - see what happens.

Well I've been down to the dealers and spoke with the manager who deals with warranties and the like.

He was surprised to see this - never noticed anything like it before. Then we checked one of their demo models - exactly the same. Then checked two brand new machines in the showroom - again the same! :blast Having said that, they were much neater than mine but they did have the two holes - one on the side and the other on the rear.

It is odd that they were all on the right hand side of the bike - the left looks fine.

He has taken some pictures and will be sending to BMW for comment. We will see what they say.

So I'd like to ask all other WC 'drivers' out there to have a look at their machines and tell me what they have....

Thanks

Think I need a :101 now!

Just looked at mine and it has two apertures on the RH side at the point you show. They aren't welding blow thru' holes since they are both smooth shaped arcs and therefore were intended to be there.
The welding in general on mine is good and neat.

This was mentioned on the Adv forum, and everyone on there with the new GS has them. Mine also has them, but they are neater holes than yours.:P I wouldn't worry about it too much, as it's obviously the way they were designed, but agree, they could have made them a bit neater on some bikes.:rob:blast

Thanks Nutty and Alp. Yeah, it seems that it's a design feature rather than a blow-through. Oh well. Not going to worry about it - just keep on riding! :D

Design feature.......................wtf

Show that weld to Vern, he'll piss his pants at that effort

I find it amazing, its a shite piece of welding, the rust trap becomes a "feature" as its now an "aperture" and has been designed in by the design team at BMW motorrad.

Yet one more design problem being dumbed down, still it could revive the cotton bud industry!

:clap

 to the WC owners, who see it as a 'design feature':blast

Must be a low load area not sure why those holes are there in the first place, looks like a shit piece of engineering but obviously does the job !

Ride and enjoy without worrying about it

I did wonder that Cookie - but then I would assume it would be on both sides...

And then there is the question - how does the water get in??!!:nenau

i don't know what the top of that tube looks like, is it open?

thinking about it, if it was just to let water out, why have two holes?

Mine is the same, not quite as scrappy welding but they look like deliberate holes to me and I bet all bikes are the same - it would be nice to know the reason but if BMW tolds us the reason I suspect that it would just generate another whole raft of speculation from the 'arm chair' experts.

i'd have thought if bmw told us what they were for, it would end the speculation :blast

They could have designed it a bit better, for gods sake.

I`m not one to go BMW beating but I`m surprised no-one thought "Oh Mein Gott in Himmell das ist shiza" because it doesn`t look pretty.

I showed it to one of my welders (I employ 3 coded) and they all said the same thing - blow thru - it seemingly isn`t but I would have hoped BMW had gone about it a different way.

Oh dear :(
