Hi All

I have recently had a fall while riding off road in the UAE through the mountains to the Oman at about 50kph and bent the engine bars on the side that i went down and craked the other side close to the factory weld. I would of thought that the factory bars would of been stronger.
has anyone else had anny problems with the BMW engine Bars.

Peter (UAE)

Welcome to the forum.

50 kph and only the weld has cracked? I think that's better than most people would hope for.

I think BMW will tell you that they are designed to protect in the event of the bike falling over. It's a mistake to think of them as crash-bars IMO, think of them more as a roll-over bar that will withstand a small amount of forward motion.

Crash bars

I have T.T. bars on my 2001 1150, these are like scaffold poles, been looking for a pair of adventure bars but now I think I'll not bother. The thing to remember is in the event of a crash somthings got to give. If everything was solid during a crash somthing is going to break, if not the bars maybe the
frame?. Like crumple zones on cars they absorb the impact, old land rovers
(proper land rovers) had half shafts designed to snap off in times of over stress inside the hub so replacement was easy, either that or the gearbox exploding. I was only after a pair in case it fell over and dented my new
(to me) adventure tank, however having just got a new baglux cover this will cover up the dents! Stick to T.T. bars, when you scratch the black paint a
bit of hammerite and ther'e back to new.
More power to the arms required for picking the thing up!.

happy crashing.

I've got the BWM aluminium rocker cover protectors and no engine bars, I dropped it on a slope while stationary and fell on the down hill side, it cracked the cylinder head boss where the rocker cover protector bolts on. Would have been much better off if no covers were fitted. An uber crap design which damages a much more expensive component than the rocker cover its supposed to protect. Total quote for the insurance was over a grand, including pannier door etc.
