BMW Extended Warranty Excess Issue

According to BMW Warranty sales computer system my "extended warranty" policy has a £100 excess. However my "Schedule of Cover" has no excess charge noted.

Only found this out when I went to collect my bike after getting the FD bearings done.

When I queried the £100 excess, with BMW Warranty, I was told that there "seems to been a misprint on the letter", and that this was "due to an administration error".

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

As you don't have access (I assume) to BMW's computer system AND if the excess wasn't mentioned when you took out the extended cover AND your warranty book/literature does not specifically mention a £100 excess DO NOT pay it.

Let BMW take the loss as it is their problem , if you have paid I would suggest a strongly worded letter to BMW's customer service department and a claim for the money back.

I have no idea on the terms of mine as I never recieved any documents, but just had some warranty work done and was not asked for any excess, although I understand the AUB warranty terms are slightly different.

They have managed to get a timely reminder out requesting more money, so I replied asking if they could explain why after about 10 calls to the dealer, 2 calls to BMW and one call to themselves I never recieved any documentation, yet the "give us more dosh" letter arrived without any problem - not holding my breath whilst I await a reply.

I know this has been asked before, but has anyone got any good experiences of other third party warranties, my main concern is big ticket items such as FD, Gearbox etc. be a real bonus if I can halve service costs and use indie as well.

You takes your chances with 3rd party because they have no relationship with the manufacturer so you can discount any goodwill. I've had a lot of dealings with 3rd party warranty companies in the truck world and I wouldn't waste my money to be honest. They will wriggle out of any potential claims through the tiniest loop holes so you have to read the small print carefully.

The only saving grace with the GS is you wouldn't have to have the manufacturer service the bike with a 3rd party warranty so you will save money. You will however have to show proper service records with a claim.

Given your aversion to all things manufacturer led, I would take out a 3rd party warranty and make sure it covers your main worry items and have the bike serviced by an Indie such as Steptoe or ABW and you won't go far wrong

I am familiar with the "loopholes" a lot of these companies try to use, hence the question as to has anyone got positive results claiming on Final Drives and other £1,000 plus repair bills or should I just hold on to my cash / put it towards another bike.

I really would like to get another year out of the GS, but with the clutch issue unresolved and the increasing chance of FD failure as the miles go on a warranty would bring peace of mind.

An excess of £100 or so would not bother me, as long as the cover was good.

You don't say how much the warranty cost you or did it come with the bike? I purchased an RT from a BMW dealer recently at the came with a zero excess policy

I know for a fact that at time of renewel you get the option of three costs for the same policy dependent on excess. Off the top of my head it's something like

Policy £365 Excess Zero
Policy £330 Excess £50
Policy £310 Excess £100

If you look at the invite letter to renew it tends to promote the £310 policy with £100 excess over the other two so I wouldn't be surprised if they sell more policies with the £100 excess

I took out the extended warranty after the 2 year factory warranty expired, in March 2010. I can't recall getting any policy documents at that time. I renewed for a second year in March this year. The only documentaion I got at the time was confirmation that my direct debit had been set up. (£29 per month)

In May this year I contacted them to check if I had european emergency cover and it was only then that I received a copy of the Schedule of Cover and policy docs.

I check with my local dealer what the current warranty costs are and see what I should be getting for my £29 pm.
