Had a very interesting discussion with BMW Warranty insurers this morning about covering a prospective bike

Because it has lapsed (over 2 years old) only by 4-5 months, the price is £360 annually and not the continuous warranty price of £310 annually

Or you could cover it monthly for about £33/month on a month by month basis, with no extra charge for credit - which seemed a weird way to do it

Recovery was included

Service history dependant and must have been done by BMW and future servicing must be done by them

List of exclusions was extensive, endless and exhaustive and things like suspension was only covered up to 30,000 miles on the speedo and no cover after that

No consumables were covered - normal stuff

No exhausts were covered and if you'd fitted a BMW sanctioned & approved Akrapovic (which this bike has) or Remus, this wasn't covered - nor was any engine damage it may have caused

Wheels were excuded - wear and tear

Any corrosion or paint issues were a 'no-no' and specifically excluded

So what's it worth - engine/electrics and drivetrain

That was the gist of what I was told - probably best to stick the £360 in a tin each year and get the bike serviced by an independant BMW specialist and put those savings in the same tin too

More on Extended Warranties

About two years ago Warranty Direct started offering extended warranties to the BMW Club. Cost £180 for my 03 R850R. Fewer restrictions than those quoted to JohnnyB. At the time I didn't take it up as the bike was running well (sigh).

When I called them last year the quote was about £350 (for a five-year old bike). I queried the doubling in premium over 12 months. The reply was that their warranty claims had been much higher than anticipated. I should have smelled a rat and taken them up on on the quote (I didn't).

Put another way: it's the REALLY expensive stuff that usually breaks out of warranty (£1,500 ABS modulator units come to mind).

Conclusion: BMW don't build 'em like they used to, and the extended warranty premia reflect that.

Get burned buying one - or eat yourself up not owning one. At least with the second pain you should get some enjoyment to.

Never did understand motorcycling as a pounds and pence exercise myself. If I had I think I would have never owned one :nenau

Since I know what bike you're looking at:augie

30k miles is a long way off on 'one of those', the main warranty concerns with 'one of those' is front suspension and rear drive, so perhaps £360 is worthwhile for peace of mind.

For you it could be an option, not for me if I bought one since I'm a long way from a dealer anyway.
In 9 years of GSing, I've never had a warranty but more importantly, I've never needed one. 9 x £360 = £3240

If you're really concerned that any warranty would be called upon, don't buy it.

There, that's confused it:D

stick the money in a tin

if you,ve not used in in a year, go to tha casino and stick it on black, or indeed red
