Folks,

With my recent problem and with my warranty running out next April i wanted to ask the thoughts on extending my warranty on the bike? Its a 2011 R1200GS TU and was wanting to get a rough idea of costs also and any experience people my have.

So as usual any thoughts much appreciated.

Many thanks
Mark

I did take out an extended warranty on my last GS, it cost IIRC £300 per year or about £30 per month with a £100 excess, or you can take a no excess option. You also get Europe-wide recovery, which is something you also need to factor in when considering the cost.

I did make one claim on it in the first few months after the manufacturer warranty expired, for a mechanical problem that developed in Germany and that needed recovery. After that I decided to maintain the policy but didn't need it again.

You do need to be aware that it's an insurance-backed warranty so the provider can legitimately stipulate dealer servicing as per the schedule as a requirement of the policy, however when I couldn't maintain servicing as per the schedule at one point they were prepared to waive that requirement when I threatened to cancel.

For balance someone else will be along shortly to tell you how terrible an idea extending the warranty is!

You need to ask yourself, can you afford it if something serious goes wrong?
If not, then take out the insurance
If you can, then take what you would pay for the warranty and the dealer servicing, and put it in the bank.
Use the savings to pay for independant servicing and any failures.
There is a better than 50% chance that you will be up on the deal.

i had the extended warranty on my two hexheads for a total of 4 years at a cost of £300/£320pa. i never claimed on it - never needed to :)

these bikes never break. everything you read on here regarding unreliability is

YMMV.

Why do people bang on about independent servicing down this way it costs just as bloody much so you may as well get bmw to do it.

It's paid off for me. Have had extended warranty for the last two years on my 2010 R1200GSA. First year, final drive bearings went and this year starter motor died during tour of Scotland. Bike recovered, nothing to pay. You need to factor in the 'piece of mind' element when weighing up the cost.

I second the 'peace of mind' benefit when assessing whether or not to go for an extended warranty. My BMW warranty's up in March next year and I'm going to extend it if possible. My bike's white too....

84k miles in on an 07 GS and I have kept the warranty going. I am definitely up on the outlay, plus the peace of mind and the European cover means that it worked for me.

Have extended the warranty on my 2006 servo assisted GSA every year, £320 a year and I've only had three headlight bulbs go. Have just had 42000 mile service at Bahnstormers (love them). Peace of mind is everything for me. If the abs has a problem it's £1000, lots of other problems are £1000, I know that so far I've spent a lot of £320's and haven't had a problem but I can confidently go anywhere on my bike knowing that I can call on BMW anytime. Has to be worth more when I sell my bike still with warranty too.

I have an email from my warranty stating that it does not needto be dealer serviced, only that genuine bmw parts need o be used

That's partially correct. You cannot take out a warranty if you bike has done over 80k but you can maintain your warranty past this figure. I do it monthly and as long as you keep paying it you can go past 80k. If you miss a payment that's it. I have checked this with the BMW warranty people and have made a claim for a new alternator at 81k that went through okay.

Plus of course the dealer servicing, so it's circa £950 per year. At that rate, you would need to be fitting a servo a year to justify it.
I do anything that is needed to my bike myself. I take a chance on the possiblity of a breakdown, and the cost thereof.
In the last 6.5 years, I have spent circa £85.00 on a fuel pump controller. That's it.
You have to make a calculated decision whether you can live with the possibility of a breakdown or not.
I will be covering over 4500 miles next month round much of Europe. I have and will have no breakdown cover whatsoever.
There will be 3 of us. If any bike should break irrepairably, one of the others will have a pillion.
If this should happen, back a couple of weeks later in a van and pick it up, but in 20 years, we have never had to do that.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone, will wait and see how things go over the coming months.

Am keen to do the servicing myself, and bought the bike deliberatly withought ABS for the reason of some issues i had read.

Will see how things go, need to get the bike back first from this issue.

That's good :thumby:
