My recently bought 2007 GS has the BMW hanguards and are fitted with the Touratech extensions on top - which I don't like. I would like to replace the BMW handguards with new ones but it seems BMW no longer make the same guards - I have to have the later ones that I believe were introduced with the 2008 facelift. What do I need to buy? BMW does a complete kit or individual guards - do I need a complete new kit or will my old fixings fit the new style of hanguards?

Thanks in advance for any advice / guidance.

BMW offers a complete kit to replace them.Go to Max BMW parts fiche down to accessories or retrofits and you will find them

That would be the cheapest option :thumby:

It leaves holes - so put the bolts back in? - it's the bolts that are the problem, I keep catching my left hand on the bolt when using the clutch.

Do I need the complete kit? Can I use any of the fittings from my original guards?

Jon, I'll shortly be removing mine to fit the later type to enable me to fit the o/e extenders ... I'll have both guards available if you're interested (and no they haven't been drilled for add-ons!)

Yes please, keep me informed. So, I guess you have bought a complete set of the new style and then the extra large top bits as well? Can you tell me what the price works out at? Cheers

Are the bolts sticking out too far ie. past the nut?

You could always think of the holes as "Speed holes" like on the early Fireblades ;)

To do that correctly I would have to drill lots of holes........

Jon, I bought the later style handguards and the add-on bits s/h off here, the only bits I don't have are the clamps needed to secure them to the bars although I guess I could fit some p-clips for now. I suffer with Raynauds so want slightly taller guards to keep the chill off the back of my hands this time of year!

I've got the same Touratech guard extenders on mine and never had that issue with the bolts. If you have to remove them you could just leave the guards with the holes in thyem and tell anyone who gives a fuck that they are bullet holes caused by a Tuareg tribesman :augie

Hi Jon, my original guards are now off the bike, let me know if they're of any use?

I'm guessing the bits for the new type with the extended tops must have cost me around £50 on here, plus I still need to source the aluminium clamp pieces, so at a guess all in the conversion would be probably around £70 - £80 using s/h bits.

A single standard hand guard clamp costs (from BMW) about £50 for both parts. Its silly money for two alloy castings that break easily but hey.
