Hi Guys, picked up my GS on Thursday from a dealer in Bristol, I had asked for a headlight protector but in the excitement of collecting the bike forgot all about it until I got home to Milton Keynes!:rob
Dealer ok no worries we will post it to you, great, and today it turned up minus instructions? and it doesn't look straight forward? Has anyone here got any to hand they could email to me?
Many thanks

I notice that the Venture shield kit for an RT contains a self adhesive shield that protects the headlight, I wonder if I could use a piece of venture shield or helicopter tape to protect my GS-LC headlamp to save fitting one of the usual metal or plastic barricades.

I'm just not sure if the heat from the LED lamp would melt it...anyone tried it?

Fitting diagram here if it's the BMW protector http://www.bmw-motorrad-store.co.uk...-2013-k50-and-r1200gs-adventure-2014-k51.html

I have been looking at various options to protect the headlight on my bike but have yet to make a choice. Those wire screens (e.g. Hepco & Becker) does not thrill me too much.

This seems a more stylish option. How well does this unit stand up to being removed frequently to allow cleaning of the area behind it? Does those screw holes wear out quickly?

Yes, in Boksburg the screw holes will be worn out, a common problem there :D. Try getting a younger screw hole, that should sort the problem.

Seriously try the Wunderlich flip down thingy.

I've had the BMW headlamp protector fitted to my March 2014 LC almost since new, and it's been removed and refitted many times when cleaning the bike. No indication of any wear etc with the fasteners so far, and it looks stylish in my opinion too. The prospect of paying for a replacement LED headlamp due to stone damage scares me, and this is my preferred alternative.

This really is a marketing departments dream. The LED headlight "glass" is Lexan, which is virtually bulletproof. I've not heard of one report of a broken headlight on an LC GS or GSA.:rob

Send it back. Or pop it on eBay:thumb

Thanks guys, called in at those nice people at North Oxford and they printed a copy off for me, so we will see how it goes!

I have to go along with your sentiments above. Been doing some reading, Lexan is a brand name (among others) for polycarbonate which is widely used in the manufacturing of headlight and fog light lenses. My current vehicle and the two before those had all the light lenses made from polycarbonate. None of these lenses ever got seriously damaged by flying stones / objects, none of these penetrated the light assembly causing damage to the internals (reflectors / globes). They did get sandblasted and ended up with tiny chip marks on the outer surface. I am not going to worry a broken headlight too much anymore.

I didn't know if I would like it or not, but since I installed it, I really have grown to appreciate it. Easy install.

+1.

My 1200 gets spanked off road and the only aftermarket protection it has is Altrider bash plate.

Save yer cash.

It can happen, I was one of the unlucky ones.
A few years ago when riding my VFR 800, something flew up from the car in front, I thought it was a fag packet or similar and thought nothing of it. When I got home and put the bike away I then saw the headlamp, it looked like someone had put their fist through it, not a fag packet then!
Since then I have put headlamp protectors on my bikes, and one of those was cracked by something.
I think of it as a one off insurance premium, also when you sell the bike take it off and you have a nice shiny head lamp.

By the way, for the BMW, or any headlight protector, try using Plastidip on the backside of the deflector to eliminate reflection on the windscreen!

I think all the bike manufactured headlamp protectors are 'for off road use only'!! don't see the problem myself and I liked the look of the more stream lined BMW offering and maybe even a couple of extra miles in mpg.
