Just a tip for anyone buying a BM for the frst time, I've just found that BMW Insurance is significantly cheaper and with better benefits than typical brokers. Anyone with over 4 years NCB should have it protected FOC as well.

They gave me the best deal too.

But there aer some on this site who have had bad experiences with the customer service - the insurance scheme is actually run by "Devitt Direct" who don't seem to know their arse from their elbow.

And a friend of mine had no end of hassles when she insured her F650 through the BMW scheme - including a threatening letter saying they hadn't got her proposal form (they had) and her insurance would be cancelled unless she paid extra money within 7 days. Luckily my friend is not the sort to take any shit from anyone, and a sternly worded letter got her an apology and a refund.

Despite all this, I couldn't afford to pay an extra £1000 to insure my GS :(

I have been with them for 3 years now, best quote on price and the best cover by far, I had 2 claims last year 1 for £2500 I hit a deer and the other for £7000 after I was tailend, both settled in 11 days dealt with via Churchill, very easy to deal with, and my premium this year is still only £195 comp.

Try insuring a 16 year old for 3rd party F&F on a 50cc moped like I've just done :(

£436 with £250 excess, the bikes only worth £500 for heavens sake

Just renewed my insurance with BMW and saved loads.

They where the only ones to give me no claims protection on a business use insurance, and still came in £70 cheaper than anybody else.

Customer service seemed ok, answered all my questions straight away without having to refer to anybody, again the only one out of a hand full I tried.

Hopefully I won't need to find out how they are with claims...

My insurance expires at the end of the month and I have been with CN for 4 years. I recently received a renewal notice for £317 (fully comp) which took into account 8 years no claims. Following several articles in Ride over the past 12 months I decided to go TPF&T on the basis that fully comprehensive cover was poor value on a bike 2 or more years old.

I rang and asked for a quote for TPF&T cover, expecting it to be £120/£150, and was dismayed to be given a quote of £326!!

Yep, TPF&T more expensive than FC. I asked why and was told it was due to the value of the bike!? 1150GS (03 reg).

Can anybody give a logical explanation for this?

Whatton, I looked at insuring my 17yr old son for our family car. Similar story made it just too expensive. But sadly it makes sense. All the insurance companies are doing is loading up those with biggest risk.

Son's friend, same age, insured a secondhand 125 for TPF+F, cost him more than the value of the machine. Unfortunately, the insurance company's view was justified.

I guess we all know it, but the insurance charge has nothing to do with the value of the machine and everything to do with the likely damage the machine will cause and the propensity of the young rider / driver to let it happen. That's why 'tossers' on BMWs get away with better premiums...

same story with me and my Dakar.

As i'm only 20, the best price i've got is just over £500 third party nicked and torched, over £800 if I wanted FC!!! oh yeah, and it's got a meta alarm and i have 3yrs no claims!

My Pug 106 1.0 cost me £1200 to insure - needless to say I don't have it anymore!

Youth does have its downfalls...

I wonder how useful it is to quote actual prices - given that insurance premiums are a mixture of various factors, including where you live:eek: .

I have only two years NCB, have a 2000GS with BMW ( their current scheme, btw,is with Churchill!!!), and pay £160 fully comp (garaged). Cheap, eyh??? None of the other insurers were able to compete with this.

However, I also live in a low crime area (Forest of Dean), so that makes the insurance cheaper anyway:D . When I lived in Bristol a few years ago, my first insurance on an old F650 was around £250 fully comp, but who knows how that compares (to what:confused: ).

The only thing to remember is to compare apples with apples (and not bananas), so bring the location into the equation, be4 breaking down with tears over your premium.:shoot:

Does the no claims discount only apply to motorcycle use? as I have 3 yrs ncb with the car but not on a bike:rolleyes:

Having waited for THREE MONTHS! for the documents to arrive from BMW insurance and two months for a cheque for the diffence in premium, I wouldn't use them again if the renewal quote was 10p. God knows how long it would take to process a claim. You only get what you pay for for and if something is cheap it probably isn't worth much.

Mixed opinions, as with all insurance companies it seems. :)

I've also been with CN for many years. I like their attitude and they are ok with me having several bikes on the same policy. I used to be TPF&T but when I wanted to add the GS last year it seems that I'd tipped over their Underwriter's value limit and I had to go FC. Didn't ask what the quote would have been had I insisted on TPF&T only; not much point.

Is there a big difference between FC and TPF&T with the bikes then, apart from if you break it you pay for it?

here's one for you..pick up my first GS this weekend (yeeha!).

BMW insurance TPF&T-£345
Carole Nash (Supposedly the best) £825!!!!

Just got mine last weekend, live in Dartford, and it came out at £280 F/C (with 9 years + NCB) but the excess is £300.

They all seemed to be quoting that as a minmum, and there was I ready and willing to offer a voluntary excess of £100 whcih I consider to be reasonable.

I went with Devitts and they seemed to fall at the first fence. I asked them to send the cover note to the dealership so they could tax the bike, guess what? It never arrived, just as well the dealer was on the case, they called me and said they hadn't received anything. I received the cover note which I then sent on.

Dare I say it's tempting not to bother with bloody insurance.

What part of London are you in Ian?

Steve

I live in North London, with one of the worst postcodes possible for insurance, plus no garage, hence the prices.

I have also asked them to send the cover note to the dealer, let's see if they get it right for me....

Paid £253 F.C. ON 11.01.05 for the 2002 GS1150 AND 2005 1200 with Carol Nash with protected full no claims (one of the few benefts of AGE!!!!)..... Thought about the BMW scheme but when I used them last and thought about buying a non BM half way through the policy, they didn't want to know as it was a higher group than the GS ( a Faser Thou. if my memeory is correct). Also got GB and European recovery with C.N. which I hope to use in the summer.
