I hope this has not been asked before, but is the top box the same as the larger pannier?

It's the same size & volume & therefore takes the same inner bag.

It is, however a slightly different shape. The lid is the same but the pannier carcass is shaped differently to allow fitment to the mounts whereas the topcase is flat bottomed.

Cheers

Does anyone know if the recall for the left hand pannier is a general one or just if you ask as I have not heard anything from my dealer which suprises me. Surely if BMW recognises a problem thenm they would contact all purchasers of the panniers to offer the replacement heat sheild rather than wait to be asked.....or am I asking to much

Have Fun

Its general. You should be notified by your dealer. However, I think the dealers are waiting until they have the stock of shields in before recalling (Seems sensible).

I gather its a while U wait job and its not too serious a problem unless you are doing a lot of slow work (eg stuck in London jams) in hot weather so probably not too much of a problem for most of us. :)

On this forum I have seen reports of melting luggage inside the famous jesse bags. On my standard expandable BMW cases I have stored food and clothing and been driving 600km's with the luggage in the left bag only slightly warmer than the right one. So to me the heat shield is not a very big issue. Anyone who already got them fixed that notice any differences?

That'll be Vern's.

Excessive heat in the panniers if caused by direct efflux from the exhaust playing on the bag. The angle of the exhaust varies from bike to bike (manufacturing tolerances & fit variation) - some will be affected, others will not.

Sounds like you have a bike with an exhaust which points the gases backwards roughly parallel with the side of the bag, Kave.

Must be different depending on the angle of the pipe. I have Jesse's on my 1200 with no problems. A bit warmer, but nothing melting or burning.
