I suspect i may need to pull the right hand head from my 2008GSA as I think I have a broken valve. I could do this myself but at the moment I am very short of time. Can anyone recommend a good independent mechanic/shop in the Southampton area who I could consider trusting with this work and who wont cost me a limb to do so?

Cheers.

VP Motorcycles in Salisbury, Vince is not a BMW mechanic, but a very good independent and really knows his stuff.

Thanks.
Decided to tackle this myself. Pulled the head last night and now have a better idea of what needs to be done.

Just waiting for a large box of bits to arrive so I can put it back together...

What bits? what have you done ??

You cant post on here without telling :nono

You must have at least one sucking in of breath & a "you didn't want to do that did you"

:)

I have dropped an exhaust valve which rattled around inside the cylinder. So I have ordered:

second hand: head with valves, piston,
New: Piston rings, head gasket, cylinder barrel O rings.

Bore looks OK so I will reuse the cylinder, hone it lightly for the new rings then chuck it all back together and see what happens....

I Havent removed the cylinder yet, my biggest concern (but I haven't really looked at what I need to do) is the valve timing. I guess as long as the motor is at TDC I just need to set the cam to TDC and it will all just work....

The bores are Nikasil plated. Are you sure about honing them?

If so, don't use carborundum unless you want to ruin the finish, professionals use diamond followed by cork.

Might be worth phoning Langcourts or other specialists for advice.

Why not just leave the bore well alone? No broken - no fix. ;)

New rings will bed in if you don't ride it like Miss Daisy.

My thoughts exactly. If Nikasil is intact, treat same as a 2-stroke and just fit new rings.

I did wonder about this after I typed it, now I cant find my honing tool anyway!

Also I didn't realise initially how badly the cylinder is damaged, it looked like a small nick above the rings but having removed it I can see it is worse than I thought so I have added a new cylinder to my shopping list as well. Might as well do it right and do it once....

No such thing as a cheap engine repair, either do it right first time or end up paying twice.
