After much too and fro on the phone today with exisiting insurance, Hastings and then faffing around with MCN compare and Bikesure and Bennetts - the cheapest option for a multibike policy (by about £140) for insuring my new K1600 and keeping my old R1200GSA was online though BMW!
I only clicked on the BMW link as it was in my welcome pack docs.
Policy says Underwritten By: Ageas Insurance Limited

Still a hefty £630 but the excess are also the lowest offered today at total £550
Also, clear and easy to use website which in iteslf is a win
Overall a happy chap

I went to see a 1250rt today to replace my 22 GS that has covered 45000m now. Before I push the button I enquired with Carole Nash what difference it might make to my premium on my multi bike policy. None of their insurers will quote as the RT’s value is too much (£12500). My other bike is a R18.
So off to the iPad & BMW have come up the cheapest at £680. My policy with CN with a GS & the R18 was £535.
The RT I’m looking at is a 22 model so almost 4 years old. If £12500 is considered too much by insurers what do they make of a new RT at £26k?!!!
So looks like I’ll be cancelling with CN & going with BMW.

sounds mad as C Nash and BMW Motorrad Insurance are broker sub-brands of https://www.atlantagroup.co.uk/ although the could be using different underwriters.

I was with MacKenzie Hodgson but their renewal price was up nearly 300%. So I went to CN who were £535-less than MH last year. Phoned MH to say I wasn’t renewing & the guy was astonished at the renewal quote & said it didn’t matter that I was going with CN as they are part of them. Cartel.

It's not unusual for at least 5 of the 10 best quotes on a comparison site to be Atlanta/Markerstudy brands. They also own Lancaster, Zenith, Swinton & Express

If it were a cartel, the prices would all be the same, surely?

Whilst, the UK motor insurance market needs a shake-up (not least as some of its practices, would see me drummed out of the Brownies) the simple truth remains that, for the vast majority of the buyers, it just about works.

Your definition of ‘works’ must be different from mine then Richard.

Firstly it’s a legal requirement, so if you have a vehicle, you are obliged to enter the circus ring of insurance, you don’t have any alternative, unless you lodge squillions with the treasury.

I think that the industry is often merely mediocre and sometimes very good when it comes to handling claims.

It is biased towards themselves when it comes to accident claims, often preferring the cheaper option of settling 50/50 when clearly that isn’t the case.

For those (fingers tightly crossed and touching wood) who rarely, if ever, have to claim, their main interaction with insurance companies is renewal.

I don’t know anyone who thinks that this is anything other than an over complicated game, again biased in favour of the industry.

How many times have folks been given a renewal figure, only to find the same company offering a cheaper deal through another route, cynical profiteering in my book.
That’s without the ‘let me see if I can get the price down’ ruse.

Here’s a thought that might just make the dreaded merry-go-around of renewal a little easier.

About 90% of the info required for a quote from different brokers/companies is standard.
Name
Address
Age
Full/prov licence
How long held
Any convictions
Yadda yadda yadda

Why don’t they all use a common template that you fill in just once at each annual renewal and you upload it to each broker/company portal and obviously add any supplementary answers required.

Considering that a significant number of brokers seem to work for the same partnerships it should be a doddle to do.

Individual insurance broker staff are very helpful, but the actual business plans are often not there to make life easy for the customer.

As a legally required obligation, the buggers have us by the short n curlies.

Good? Sometimes, but most often mediocre.

I had a good experience with them as well (used them on and off over the years), and last year moved back with them with all three bikes, one of which is a Suzuki, and the terms are very good. Especially the length of the coverage abroad if I remember correctly.

I'd happily pay a bit more to have a smoother and clearer experience with the insurer, and this was 100% the case.
Hopefully I can renew with them again this coming January.

Said that, I fully agree with Oldrat. And I'm not talking about cost.
