BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty

Hi, had my renewal letter and login details. Two things jump out. 1) this is an insurance policy whereas before it was a warranty extension. 2. More worryingly, the max payout is £1,000 and set out against a cost £414 Plus an excess of £50 = total of £464) the return is not good. The only upside is the roadside recovery including European. What are other peoples thoughts ? What do you do ?
 
The Motorrad Insured Warranty for at least the last 10 years has always been an Insurance from a third party rather than an extension of the manufacturers warranty, however, I never had a maximum payout amount stipulated on any of mine before , also remember that in the UK the bike is repaired and the bill goes to the company and you only pay the excess .
If you are in Europe and need to use the service you have to pay for repairs up front and then reclaim the costs when back in the UK via a BMW dealership

My maximum amount is the value of the bike? Policy taken out in November 2025.
 
With my 2 bikes, both 2016, an S100XR (owned from 2018 to 2023) and an R1200RS (owned 2016 to 2025) I did not extend the 2 years factory warranty. At £350 a year, I saved 12x350 = £4200 in premiums. I did not have one repair in my ownership of those bikes that would have been covered by an extended warranty. If I extrapolate that to years of car ownership from 1982, I reckon I am about £40k better off in today's money by self insuring. That pays for a lot of repairs, although I have been lucky enough not to have needed one.
Breakdown cover inc Europe can be bought for under £60 from Green Flag if you go to Moneysupermarket or the Meerkats.

Do you travel very far, or very often?
What I do suits me.
Your maths and mine do not coincide, but thats of of little consequence.

Correct its an insurance policy

The limit of £1000 is odd, as my ECU & labour was way more than that and that was covered

If your paying £50 excess, suggests that youve either opted for that , or had a lapse in cover

The range was £100 £50 or £0 the £0 excess ( higher premium) or £50 / £100 lower premium, or lapsed policy & the £0 excess is no longer able to be applied

to put it into perspective my lemon cost me £0 on warranty claims

Had i had the £50 excess would have cost me over £300 in excess costs
 
Check it covers recovery. My pal has just renewed his warranty and the recovery was an extra cost.
 
IF you do European tours, it is a no brainer. Otherwise, take your chances..
That's the only reason I have it. Renewed mine sitting in Jerez. The peace of mind whilst far from home is worth it to me.

I have had the opposite experience and have had to claim on every insured warranty I've had over the three GSs I have owned since 2016. Opinions are like arseholes but the only thing I can add is if you can afford the premium, get it. I am massively in credit compared to my outlay. I should also add that I am not a lucky person. As my Old Dad used to say, 'You could fall into a barrel of tits and come out sucking your thumb'.

Back in 2008 the ESA on the RT was just over £2000 , the cover was just over £300 p/a. So I was well ahead. My experience with BMW Rescue last year was a fucking disaster. Considering I was in West London on a Sunday afternoon they let me down big time. I need to have a better look at the policy before I decide to take one out.

I've yet to need them in Europe but my UK experience has been very much a mixed bag. I've probably used them six times and it was a 50/50 split between being great and shit. But to be fair, I've found that with the various recovery companies I've used for my cars over the years.

After the cluster fck with BMW recovery, I made a complaint. Received £300 compensation. I took pictures and kept all the screen shots, also I did a live stream 3am in the morning from Hammersmith flyover, I invited BMW UK but no one accepted the invitation ;) Shit happens...
 
2020 R1250GS-TE. 18,500 miles. One of the faster white ones.

My current warranty expires today so I was just reading through the policy in the renewal. Basic cover with £100 excess is £357 a year. That excludes roadside assistance breakdown cover.

The maximum claim is only £1,000 if the market value of you bike is less than that. I can't believe there are many BMW bikes that are still being used that are worth less than a grand.

The wording in the policy is:-

"Up to the market value of the insured motorcycle at the time of your claim, or up to a maximum of £1,000 (whichever is greater), including VAT. This is the maximum total amount that can be paid for a single claim, or the total of multiple claims during a 12-month period."


The entire exhaust system (with the exception of catalytic converter) is specifically NOT covered, and one of the regular recurring faults is seizing of the exhaust flap valve that requires new header pipes to repair, so that puts me off. Anything that can be attributed to corrosion is also discounted.

I get full RAC cover, UK and Europe including repatriation, through my bike insurance with Hastings Direct.

So even though I'm normally a fairly cautious type, it's a "No" from me.

I have called on their services, three times. Once in the UK and twice abroad. On all occasions, the service was very good.

Hey-ho, sometimes you win, sometimes not.
 
Like any insurance policy, its ‘value’ comes from a claim. It is, after all, a contract of indemnity, not an investment.

For every “I have never bought it”, “I put the money I save in a box under the bed”, “I would rather push my bike home from the Alps, than pay this” reply, you’ll hear a corresponding number of “Phew, that saved me money” and “My holiday was saved” and “I just like the security of having it, though I have never claimed on it”.

In short, it’s just a matter of personal choice. Toss a coin, if you really can’t decide.
