I have a 2006 BMW R1200GS That I bought a bit opver a year ago. The bike came with a full one year warranty that I had to use once not long after buying the bike. All went fine problem solved no worries and no cost.
After the first year I decided to buy another year of the warranty from BMW at what I thought was a reasonable price. Well tyhree months into the new warrenty the rear brake light switch started playing up, and I had a bit of rough running at tick over. So the bike was booked into Chandlers BMW in brighton who I have to say are the stars of this fiasco..
Now when I bought the bike I asked many times if I could service the bike myself and was told yes as long as I used BMW or equal quality parts. So over the year I did the services and used BMW parts with the exception of oil filter and that was a K&N, I enquired with BMW if that would be OK and was told yes it would be fine for the warranty.
The day after I dropped the bike off at Chandlers the lady from the service department called and asked for a scan of my service book. I told her that it had been serviced by me using BMW parts. Off she went only to come back to me a few hours later to tell me the warranty department wouldnt pay for defective parts or anything else come to that.
I then phoned BMW financial and had a long chat with the woman on the customer desk. I was asked how I was qualified to do the service work and could i prove my ability. Well ignoring 40 years in engineering with a distinct bias to vehicle restoration and a fairly good degree in mechanical engineering it would seem I was not qualified. the end result they wouldnt honour the warranty.
So back I go to chandlers and tell the story, the woman on the service desk said leave it with me, I did so and two days later the bike was done with just the excess to pay. I have a feeling they are still arguing the toss with BMW financial.
THe other point that irked me is the lady at BMW financial informed me because I was in the motor traid they would not be able to carry on the insurance with out consulting thier underwriter.
To say the least I am pissed off and will not be using the service again. I will simply put a grand aside for possible bike problems and dip into that if I need too.
Any way thought I would pass this on..
But as far as Chandlers BMW go id give them a big thumbs up for the help and an even bigger one for the 1000R loan bike I had for seven days. That was a pure giggle from start to finnish!

Perhaps suggesting to them that misselling is rather frowned upon by fca.

Does policy specifically exclude motor trade, probably made up bollocks said to try and get out of a hole.

Sadly, unless you've got it in writing your screwed.

Good to hear of great service from the dealer.
