Owned my 2021 R1250GS since April last year and, touch wood, it hasn’t put a foot wrong. Not a single problem.
Naturally, on the way to its 12k service today, the bloody thing decided it was an appropriate time to refuse to start at the services.
Nothing quite like turning up for a service on a bike that has already diagnosed itself.
It has, however, prompted me to finally sort out proper breakdown cover, particularly as next spring I’m hoping to venture into the slightly more adventurous world of European touring.
I’ve had a look at the usual comparison sites and, as expected, there are a multitude of companies I’ve never heard of, alongside the AA, RAC etc. The thing I’m struggling to establish is whether there’s actually much difference when it comes to motorcycles. My understanding is that a lot of the general breakdown providers are essentially geared towards cars and if a bike gives up the ghost, the solution is largely going to be: send someone out, establish it isn't going anywhere and eventually stick the GS on the back of a truck.
That’s got me wondering about BMW Motorrad Roadside Assistance. Their cover is obviously motorcycle-specific and they talk about motorcycle technicians, recovery to a BMW Motorrad retailer, and European assistance. So, for those who have actually used it — is there a genuine advantage to using a BMW/motorcycle-specific breakdown service, particularly in Europe, or am I just falling for the reassuring BMW badge and convincing myself that it must somehow be better?
Interested in hearing from anyone who has had experience.
And yes, before anyone says it… I realise the bike choosing the morning of its service to demonstrate why I need breakdown cover is probably the closest thing to a recommendation I’m going to get
