I've the Garmnin lifetime maps option with my Nav 4, recent maps updates are now too big for the device if you want full Europe coverage. I would like to get them all on it as I want to do a trip that will cover a lot of Europe and I don't want to have to mess with the maps half way round.
The unit is a couple of years old and has had a lot of updates carried out.
Is there any way of wiping/deleting the files on the unit to create enough space without totalling it? I'm led to beleive that you can install maps to the SD card, is this a viable option as in do they just work from there?

In a word yes you can load them onto an SD card, or remove some of the 3d and junction files and have all of the mapping on the unit - see the Mapsource forum and particularly Bumpkin's posts for this ! Also this is a good link for things you can delete like unecessary voices, help files etc.:

When updating it even tells you you can have the excess on an sd card :blast

delete all languages except english plus the help files from the unit then you should have plenty of room for all the latest mapping.

I think what this does is actually load the whole map onto the SD card, not split across the device and card. Which is fine as long as your card does not fail, then you have no maps. Better to do that half and half approach I think :)

Installing to the card works fine, just ensure that you have a spare card with everything copied across to it if your going on a big trip. Either that or a notebook with the mapping and Mapinstall on it.

If, like me, you want everything on the internal memory then you'll need to have a clear-out and then install your mapping as outlined in post #7 of this thread.
