Hi there,
I recently bought a BMW Navigator II which has the additional 4 buttons on the left integral to the BMW cradle. I have uploaded City Navigator 2008 and transfered my maps to the new ubit however I can't get the left hand buttons to function:( Is there a specific version of the Navigator software for the BMW Navigator II or is it the same as for the Garmin 2610. My software I originally used on a 2610 and I was wondering if I need a specific City NAvigator for the BMW unit. I wouldn't have thought so but wondering if anyone knew or any other ideas why the buttons wouldn't be working. I have checked the connection to the cradle and it seems fine.

Any help much apprciated.

regards

Are you really sure?

The buttons only control the unit, ie zoom and escape from a certain screen - so the mapping shouldn't affect it

I've even tried the original 512MB card in to make sure it wasn't to do with a new card I have fitted.

Johnny, when you use the buttons on the left d you still get the option to use them on the touch screen as I would have thought that these wouldn't be present which makes me think its something to do with the software.

Any ideas anyone:nenau

I'll go out and check my Nav2

The problem will not lie with the maps City Navigator or Mapsource. It will be with the unit firmware (which is not on Garmin's website any more) or will be an electrical/mechanical problem with the cradle.
Ring an established, decent BMW dealer who might be able to troubleshoot or the previous owner.
There was a BMW-specific version of the City Navigator maps that might have had updated BMW dealers on it.

Thanks for that John,
I do hope its not the firmware but fear thats what it maybe when I changed to the latest version of City Navigator that I have there was a message saying it may delete some files:( If this is the case can I reinstate the firmware. I have all the discs that came with the unit originally and will try it when I get back, I may be able to source a specific software for the BMW navigator to get the latest maps (I hope). I don't think Garmin will look at these units anymore so hope there is a fix somewhere out there, I'm confident it won't be the cradler as I have just bought it and it was working fine with the older software.

have you changed the power lead from the battery, the bmw navigator one is different to the standard garmin one at least with the nav III, they look the same and fit the same but they appear to be wired up different

Thats interesting. The lead that came with it appears tohave 3 cores at the power end black, Red and purple if I remember correctly). At te GPS end one side goes to the GPS and the other goes to the cradle. A normal Garmin lead only goes to the GPS but has a headphone output too.

At the power end I have connected red to +ve and black to -ve with the additional core unconnected.

Anyone care to comment?

Andy:)

If you need a spare cradle, I have an old one in the garage with the locking tab missing but its easy to swap the tab from your cradle to this one. PM me if you need it.

Did you use the BMW installer CD to do the install of CN? When I had a Nav2 you had to install the Garmin software via the BMW installer CD, maybe that adds some functionality to the garmin code as it installs it?

I don't know if I still have a copy of the BMW installer CD but if I do you are welcome to it. If not, you could always ask your BMW dealer nicely for a lend of a disk.

You have the right cable, can't comment on the wiring as mine is wired to a BMW plug from new and the other power cable (you get 2 power cables with a Nav2) isn't attached to the bike:blast

How bigs your garden Johnny:augie

No rush actually as I'm offshore but desperately want to find out as the 4 buttons on the left are the reason I bought the BMW Navigator:tears

Sorry, I forgot:blast

Mine either works with the buttons or will zoom in/out and escape via the touchscreen on left side, independently of the buttons

It looks like I need to reload all the software from scratch. I have all the original BMW CD-Roms so will give it a go when I get home, I'm sure theres not issue with the hardware it will be something I've done when using my version of the software to update the maps - every day is a school day:D

Hi guys, new to the site but I am in a similiar positon. Have a Navigator II which was originally bought for a 1200 LT. It comes with a power lead with a white plug at the far end. There are 3 wires, a red, a black and a purple. If you connect the red and black the system works but the cradle does not. Seems to me the purple is the feed for the cradle. Just in the processs of fitting it to the bike, but as yet have not heard any sound coming from the uhit when planning a route. Purple is maybe the sound as well.

I was considering joining the red and purple together so both get the 12v.

Anyone got any views on this?

Further to above, I now have the crade working as normal, but nowhere to connect the purple wire. There is 3.4v coming out of the purple wire. Still have no output from the small plug under the crade to feed headphones. Does anyone have any history on this one.

How did you get the cradle working?? Did you just connect the Black and red to the 12v supply and the purple cable is not connected .

I'm confident mine is a software issue and will have another look when I get onshore next week.

I have a second cradle on my K75. It's wired to the power socket, minus the purple wire and I've just checked; the four cradle buttons work just as they do on my GS (where it's wired via the BMW plug that connects to the loom at the beak power socket).

Check that you have the BMW lead, it branches into two, the flat multi-connector that powers the unit and a four-pin circular plug that powers the cradle.

When it comes to audio, there's a specific lead that plugs into the cradle and then to whatever system is used to get the audio to your ears.
