BMW Navigator III - Experiences

OK let's accept it's not easy.

(a) The sunshine on the screen is not a significant problem with the NavIII. Now and again the sun may hit it, so as to make it difficult to read. There again, the sun can shine off the bodywork of cars, off the road or in your mirrors as well, making it difficult to see where you are going. It's just part of life.

(b) No idea why some are green. Maybe it's just an artist's mock-up in a picture? I can't remember what colour mine was, nor for my Zumo. Does it really matter? A friend has one but it's no good me asking him as he is colour blind.

(c) BuMW do a yoke based mounting bracket, or at least they did. Ask at your dealer or do a websearch. Mine came in the box, along with replacement (longer) handlebar clamp bolts. I cable tied it to my Blackbird, way before I had a BuMW. It worked quite well as a lash up on the Honda for about 30,000 miles.

I sold my yoke cradle to a bod on UKGSer as I couldn't get on with it on my vanilla 1200. Why? As I said before, I found it annoying (and not a little dangerous) to look down, re-focus, look up again, re-focus. I preferred it over the clocks (I bought a mount from a certain Dutchman, but he was apparently very naughty so we don't mention him any more). On my GSA, I had the NavIII mounted up high, using a mount from the bod in Belgium. I have my Zumo in the same place. But lots of people (inc. BuMW) sell different mounts.... and lots of people mount them differently. It's a personal thing, like underpants.

Hopefully that is all your daft questions answered.

I've come up through the Nav 1, Nav 2, Nav 2+, Nav 3 and Nav 3+ and have not got one complaint. You don't get any brighter sunshine Sunshine than the Gobi Desert and it wuzn't a problem there :pullface

Mounting? Speak to Wunderlich, Touratech or any BMW dealer, it's not Rocket Science

Thats all I wanted to know - thanks! The TomTom Rider (I've read from user forums) seems to not have a very good screen - hence why I'm asking on here cause I don't want to find that during the summer my screen is useless!

Couldn't remember Wunderlich but I couldn't find anything useful as Touratech from their website at least and BMW didn't seem to have anything to offer me when asked? And no it's not rocket science - but what's is the problem asking for this type of info on this forum?

See (c) above. Or maybe BuMW have stopped stocking them as the Nav III+ is no longer their primary GPS device? Or maybe they just saw you coming? ;) Who knows?

Try placing an an advert in the FSW section. Maybe someone will have one gathering dust in a cupboard? You will need the longer clamp bolts, too. As I said, I flogged my old yoke to cradle support to someone here.

Failing that, wait for someone selling an entire kit. Buy the lot, retain the mounting support and flog the rest.

No problem, but you just kept asking and not seeming to listen

The Nav 3+ has an anti reflective screen, part reason why it costs more than the Garmin veresion!

If you go in to settings you can chose a colour for your route direction, Magenta being default, and trust me on this one ... it's the best because it doesn't conlict with any other road colours, railways, rivers or national park boundaries.

I mounted mine as shown but before mounts were available for the F800GS ... I 'modified one from another model.... no probs. In this position the clocks are clearly visible at the same time as the GPS.

I did apologise post # 16

The NavIII+ screen was also coated to prevent possible problems with fuel spilling on it. Garmin had some problems with screens peeling, replaced though without too much drama.

Micky's picture shows the 1200 mount I was on about. Being a self-reliant fellow, Micky has modified it to fit an 800 and saved himself some dosh. Ask Ocean (or whotever your dealer is) to order you one, if BuMW still have it on their parts list. If they do not, search for one or get one made, or try to make one yourself.

Don't forget the longer, special, bolts.

The instructions give a torque setting for the clamp bolts, so you will need a torque wrench and a suitable socket, as the replacement bolts have a different head.

Handlebar mounts from TT

This and this perhaps.

They come up quite often for sale here or on Ebay.

Like I said earlier, I use the Migsel mount on the windscreen support as I don't need to move my head to look at it.

I don't think these will work with the NavIII+ which has its own cradle.

Just arrived at this thread having got a second hand nav3. Does anyone know a good source of a power cable for off bike use? mine came without.
I assume the device is connected to a PC by standard mini USB/usb?

One final one Map updates?

Power cable: Contact Garmin or ebay or Google.

Conection to PC. That's right.

Map updates: You can order the map updates (CD or DVD) from BuMW or from Garmin. Take care that you get the right ones, as the Nav III differs from the run-of-the-mill Garmin model of the same type. The update cd's and dvd's are free, but you will have to pay for the unlock code though.

You may well be able to download updated maps from the Garmin site, by registering the unit's serial number. It should pick it up as a BuMW device and allow you to go ahead with the correct download. The files are big though, so get War and Peace ready.

Call Garmin or contact them (see Garmin website) they are usually very helpful.
