im thinking of doing the bmw off road skills thingy.anyone done it,is it worth the money,as im fed up of lying on my back with the bike on top of me.as some on here may have noticed.or is there a cheaper nearer alternative.all info gratefully received. j

Hi Jim been toying with the idea myself - keep me up to speed and let me know if you decide to have a go cos chances are if the price is OK I might join you - mind you quite few lads I know have done the off road in the Sierra Nevada and swear by it - small light bikes, foreign country, scenery , crack etc I know Marriots organize a trip using the same Co. based out there every year and everyone who's been on it always go back for more.

Not cheap but a great venue good tips and instructors and if you ride there and back coming back is one of the best rides you will have
and finally do it early on in the year as the bikes get more and more shagged as the year goes on lots of threads on here about it.
As for the money £550 (inc Abercrave inn) well spent if you ask me

Done it and recommend it,some good basic things will get you out of trouble,and ways you may not of thought of!!!.The team in wales are well friendley and give good advice if you want to hear it,i say this as on my 2 days there were some all the gear an no idea in my group,who thaught they knew it all (wrong),the instructers are there for you to get the most from your time with them!!!!.Great crack,great poeple ,good experience,ive done motocross in my past but still learnt things.Get it booked before it gets to hot or youll melt if its a warm spell

I did an off-road day with a company called i2i in Yorkshire; we rode KTM525 and 250 EXCs. Good course and 'only' about £140.

Jim, my first time laning was this time last year on the bunkhouse weekend in Wales. I'd got the GSA 4 weeks earlier having not ridden a bike for 3 years. I'd NEVER ridden off road, and the amount of advice and knowledge I got from TerryNW (who doesn't ride a bike anymore), Doc Savage (Ditto), MickDB, and Rudiemoto on the ride was worth way more than £550!! Don't underestimate the knowledge the tossers on here can give you....

My point? Just get out on as many off road rides as you can this year, soak up as much info as you can from the guys you're with, ride carefully within your limits, and the penny drops even more on every lane you ride..... You're wallet will be grateful, and I reckon your off road skills will be better too....

I did and broke my leg on the course.

NOT DESIGNED FOR NODDY RIDERS!!

A person I met on holiday two years ago had an even worst experience .. worst damage to leg. Instructor nowhere to be seen (like my situation). I was actually looked after by the Phil Reynolds of this site after the fall. I had to ride bike back to depot with broken leg!!

For the price, there is inadequete planning for incidents like mine for worst. The person I met on holiday couldn't ride the bike back to the depot. Ambulance access was not planned so she had a terrible time (painful) just getting off the site.

SO BEWARE!

If you are pretty tasty at riding off road then you will have fun as instructors (very loose term from my experience) prefer to have a "mates" ride out with competent riders rather than teach inexperienced riders.

I've been out with Stevie73 and the gang and I recollect being out of the saddle at least 5 times but as Stevie73 says the info they imparted and the experience was worth a lot. I'm sure the Off Road schools is good but I don't need to blow £££'s before I can learn something.

This was not my experience. I've done one or two courses in the UK and a couple in Spain and Pavey's BMW ORS is the most professional well structured course I have been on. I learnt loads on the course. I've done the Level 1 basic and the Level 1 advanced and will be doing the Level 2 later this year. It's money well spent. Just do it. You will love it. At the end of the day injuries are a possibility. It's the nature of what we do. But how many courses do you know of where helicopter medivac is available if you are really in the shit? And yes, two guys on my course had broken bones but it was handled very professionally. As well as the excellent training it's a great two days and you'll meet some quality people, make new friends and have a great time. That's my opinion for what it's worth.

This isnt my experience, I did the course in Oct and thought it was fantastic I learnt loads but as large bloke I must admit it was hard work!!
I broke my Tib and Fib in the last hour of the course and yes the ambulance couldnt get to me but then I was in the middle of a forest with no signal. Simon Pavey (my Instructor) collected the ambulance man and then an air ambulance was sent to get me. It couldnt land very close but a 4 x 4 was arranged and I was airlifted to Swansea.
I was very impressed with the organisation of the recovery all told, and would highly recommend the course.
Dont fall off and break something though 'cos thats a right royal pain in the arse!!!

I've been on level 1 courses two years running and found the instructors very professional and competent. The course starts out very instructional and ends up as a ride-out with mates, but that is how it should be. You learn things and then get get to use them and because you are not riding your own bike you can throw yourself into it without worrying about damage to the bike.

You can meet a lot of great people on the course and the evenings at the bar add to the fun.

Expensive but worth it. I went about five years ago with a group of mates, we stayed a few miles away in some old victorian hotel thats supposed to be one of the most haunted buildings in UK, only spirits we saw were behind the bar.
My pals wife was having great difficulty with the first day of level one and ended up having one to one tuition with Mr Pavey for a few hours. Only downer on a great trip was the two days of heavy rain and smashing my bo**ocks on the handlebars in a tumble on the last afternoon, oh how we laughed.......Not.
