I had a puncture this morning on my rear TKC. Fixed without any problems at side of the road using the BMW puncture plugging kit. It says in the kit "DON`T EXCEED 50 AND YOU MUST GET THE TYRE TO A SERVICE POINT AND REPLACE AS SOON AS YOU CAN".
Do I really need to do that? The hole was in the centre of the block pattern and the tyre has about a 2000mls left in it. I don`t want to junk it unless really nescessary! I rarely get above 60mph on my commute. So what do you lot reckon?
Thanks, L :beerjug:

Puncture Repair Kit

I went to Morocco in October, and had a puncture going through Spain, it was repaired using the BMW kit, and the tyre was fine, all kinds of roads in Morocco, all kinds of speeds, but nothing silly, just keeping up with the rest of the group. Still had nothing done to the tyre, never had to put more air in,and still using it most days on a 150 mile round trip.

No probs. as long as you've done a good job, and you can usually tell by looking at it, if you know what I mean! Used 'em dozens of times, mostly on other peoples 'bikes (customers... training and tours) and not one problem.

Even known 'em to be used (ahem!) on track days.... :clap

as long as you've done a good job
That remains to be seen :D
That`s what I was hoping to hear, thanks guys, I`ll be leaving it then, will keep an eye on it though :thumb

Lukate,

I had a flat with a 2" nail embedded up to the head in my rear ( snigger ) even though I had ultrasnot fitted.

I used the B*W plug and it worked very well. Although I found it very scary to ram the spike tool into and through the tyre carcas.

Since then I have done 5k at all the usual speeds in all sorts of weathers and havn't given it a second thought. That being said the nail was dead centre of the tyre & in the centre of a tread block so I felt fairly confident that if the plug popped out the tyre would deflate in a stable way.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

So did the ultrasnot do its job then harlequin6? :)

I did a repair on the 'thin' bit between the treads of a quite worn front tyre. Started to leak after abou 200 miles. I think if the puncture had been in part of the chunks tread, would have lasted :nenau

I did a repair on the rear tyre of a GPz500, it wasn't using the BMW kit but a very similar one. The repair lasted the rest of the life of the tyre, about 3000 miles, never needed any more air.

i used one once on a brand new tyre that i rode for 30000 miles that didn't even have a puncture.
When the tyre wore through it was the only bit of rubber left wrapped around the rim.
I still rode it from london to Edinburgh at 90 mph cos there was no air left to deflate.

you tell young people that and they won't believe you.

Just seen this thread...

I got a puncture on my GS before the initial 600mile service. Slime didn't fix it  but the BMW kit did. I plugged it, took it to a service station to fill it with air, and all was well. I rode it till I changed tyres. I kept a good eye on it, and if I was going fast I kept the plug in my mind. Tyre was an Anakee.

If you use common sense and you're careful, you'll probably get away with using the plug till the end of the tyre's life. :)

So are you saying if you think about it hard enough it won't blow out. Mind over matter eh? I'm impressed ;)

No... what I meant was I took the plug out, and put it into my mind - through my ear... :thumb
