I've just been informed by my dealer that they have been told not to let any new GS or GSAs out of the garage, which is annoying as I was due to pick mine up on Tuesday

No more news than that and a very apologetic salesman.

Anyone know what the hell that's about?

Wow following with interest cos mine is 1 month old has to be safety related

Yep, it was on FB last night and some were claiming BMW had suspended the Dealer rectification inspections yesterday, in favour of something 'new' in the pipeline

Fork Stanchion

So what, a safety recall (instead of just inspections) for this fork issue?

Bloody hell, if they have to do a recall it will be so expensive....much more so than the RT problem a couple of years ago

Makes you wonder about the unexplained death of Kevin Ash back in 2013 while riding a GS on the BMW launch for the new model.

Called bmw and they have said it's a service campaign to do with the forks there is no recall
That was Welwyn Gdn city

What's the difference between a service campaign and a recall ?

With a recall, all bikes are called in ASAP and fixed, if it's a service campaign then work done at next service.

If it's a safety critical recall, then all bikes are off the road now, like the RT problem.....doubt if BMW will want to go down that route, bloody expensive

I guess they couldn't cope with a recall . Hopefully nobody will suffer serious injury whilst they sort this mess out.

Nutty must have known , as he had his 1290 delivered the same week as his Rallye

This is all I could see on the BMW Motorrad Facebook page, from 30th June

"Service Campaign R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure
As part of a service campaign, BMW Motorrad is checking the fixed fork tubes of the front forks on motorcycles of the R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure models for the production period November 2013 - June 2017.
BMW Motorrad has determined during ongoing field observations that the fixed fork tube of the specified models can suffer preliminary damage due to unusual incidents with momentary high stress without the user noticing the damage, e.g. through changed drivability. Such high stress can be caused e.g. when driving over an obstacle, during a fall or when driving through deep potholes with unvarying speed. Preliminary damage to the front wheel rim is also not unusual in such cases, but need not be necessarily present. Potential preliminary damage to the fixed fork tube manifests itself through a gap between the pipe and the pressed in top seal plugs. For the check, the rubber grommet mounted in this position must be pushed down.
BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to check the above-mentioned vehicles and repair them if required. The owners of the affected motorcycles will be informed by BMW Motorrad. The service campaign is free of charge for customers.
Best regards,
BMW Motorrad Team"

I've had a look on VOSA and there's nothing listed there apart from this old recall

However, my dealer has said that they are in contact with BMW and the whole situation will be clarified by an "official" statement from BMW this afternoon. That was from a phone call 5 minutes ago.

I've been watching this with a keen eye as I'm due to pick up a GSA soon.

Im in with my dealer now they have just had a call from the fatherland! Bikes can be used but will be recalled via dvla.
