Thema DELIVERY STOP STOP310001: K50/K51 Retrofit of fixed fork tube bushes
Dear Sir or Madam,
Delivery Stop:
All vehicles that are marked with this special defect code “0STOP310001” are subject to a delivery
stop. It is not allowed to deliver new or used K50/51 motorcycles to customers unless a visual
inspection is carried out on the affected vehicles.
The check is carried out according to the repair manual 31 42 201. If during the check according to
the repair manual, no gaps are detected between the fixed fork tube and the plugs then the vehicle
can still be ridden. The customer should be advised and the rectification work carried out at the 600
mile service. For used motorcycles please contact your customer as soon as you have stock to
complete the outstanding action. The visual inspection is to be settled using the defect code 31 42 90
98 00.
Please ensure you have the bushes ready for these customers at the 600 mile service.
Motorcycles PDI’d at the MPDC will be delivered to BMW Centres in the normal way but must not be
delivered to the end user unless a visual inspection is carried out on the affected vehicles.

Fact:
On R1200GS-models (K50/K51) the fixed fork tube can be damaged due to unusual incidents with
momentary high stress without the user noticing the damage, e.g. through changed drivability.
Effect:
If the fit of the press-fitted seal plug has loosened, the gap may increase through longer usage with
high stress. This usually leads to oil leaks, a clacking noise as well as increasingly imprecise drivability.
If these signals are not perceived or ignored and further high stress incidents occur, the plug may
become completely loose. Subsequently, critical driving conditions cannot be ruled out.
Measure:
Additional fixed fork tube bushes must be retrofitted.
Procedure / Reimbursement:
The full information will be published shortly
Further information
Tools for this action have all been delivered to the BMW Motorrad Centers
Retailer backorders will be in Pineham tomorrow further stock will follow shortly
With best regards
BMW Motorrad

If, as has been suggested, the cause of the fork problem on some bikes (not mine) may be caused by harsh off road use, then why does this affect brand new, zero mile bikes ?

The plot thickens !

No it doesn't. There is nothing stopping a new owner from riding their zero mile brand new bike off-road immediately after collection and riding under exactly the same conditions as a 10k mile bike might be subjected to when taken off-road for the first time. A recall is about the prevention of a potential future problem, surely anyone can figure that one out?

I've just been mailed by my dealer and given the same info posted above by Dave, so all is well, chalk it up to "the internet strikes again" :)

My point is this.

A brand new bike will have brand new forks presumably delivered from Marzocchi. These forks will have been passed by quality control so would assume to be all good.So why bother examining these ? Is there a problem with that particular supplier of these forks ?

Engineer tells us that all is well, he knows best............you know

Well not sure how a service interval recall stops actually sales of new bikes? or am I missing something

I've been chatting via Facebook Messenger to BMW Motorrad UK....

BMW:
Good afternoon Eugene

Thanks for your message.

I've spoken with our Motorrad technical team and I’ve been advised that after further investigation, there is a possible issue surrounding the front forks which will now be addressed as a recall on R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure models for the production period November 2013 - June 2017.

At this time, we’ve stopped all deliveries of new R1200 GS and R1200 GS Adventure bikes, to ensure that all potentially affected bikes are reviewed. I know this is disappointing and I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I can assure you we’re working to get this rectified as soon as possible. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please get back in touch.

ME:
Ok, thanks - better safe than sorry - any idea how long it will take before new bikes can be released? ie, how long I might expect to wait until I can have my new bike?

Good afternoon Eugene

Thanks for your message.

The recall is active from tonight, and our Motorrad Centres will be working hard to start implementing these changes from Monday.

The fix itself shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, and the parts are being shipped very shortly, so hopefully your bike shouldn't be delayed too long - but unfortunately I don't have an exact date.

I'd recommend keeping in touch with Vines of Guildford as they'll be best placed to discuss when this recall will be carried out on your bike, and when it will be available for delivery.

If there's anything else I can do for you in the meantime, please get back in touch.

Just spoken to Vines and bikes are going out once checked!

yeah, that is odd, so we will not release any new bikes until they are tested and safe or modified, but ok for everyone to carry on riding.

I had an annual service today and fork inspection.
I was told there was no sign of them failing but the bike will be recalled to fit 'the cure' in due course.

Makes you wonder about the unexplained death of Kevin Ash back in 2013 while riding a GS on the BMW launch for the new model.

Yep - it's been on my mind since reading about the fork stanchion issue. I can't remember whether there was any enquiry/result of the accident...
